Chez Omar is a nouveau Caribbean restaurant. Chef Omar is inspired by his Jamaican roots and Caribbean travels. This location comes as a second iteration of Omar's Kitchen and Rum Bar in NYC's Lower East Side.

Chef Omar's initial interest in Jamaica’s native fruits and vegetables led to an all-out exploration of a culture that blends a Caribbean twang with an urban New York twist.

He grows in his style by experimenting with these cultural blending techniques for friends and family, even dabbling in new ways to curate vegan Caribbean dishes.

Steak served after far too long and was far more done than asked and tasted dry. The rest was ok The service was kind.

On the positive side, the dining room is comfortable and relatively quiet and the prices are reasonable. On the neutral side, the food is (mostly) OK. We had four dishes--the crab cake (more cake than crab), the Jamaican shrimp (so-so), the lamb chops (very good), and the conch croquettes (fantastic; two tennis ball sized croquettes, crispy, meaty and full of shellfish flavor). We also ordered the first rate French fries. On the negative side, the service was attentive but amateurish (e.g., people are not ready to order the second they sit down, so why ask; why do so many dishes have French names if the staff can't understand the French). The wine list was a joke. There were four reds listed by the glass--none was available. There were perhaps twenty reds on the bottle list; only three were available, two of them priced in excess of $100. So clearly this is a semi-professional restaurant. There is, however, a very comfortable bar. If they ever manage to restock the wine list, I could see having a glass of wine and the conch croquettes at the bar as a prelude to dinner elsewhere, or the croquettes and the French fries as a meal!

Great staff, very good food. Looked Jamaican, but tasted more French. Overall, very nice.
