The Chequers Inn, which is owned and run by the Holmes family, is a traditional rural pub situated in the heart of the Isle of Wight within the beautiful countryside. Our pub is the perfect place to eat, sleep and drink on the Isle of Wight, and also perfect for just stopping by for a pint of traditional local ale.

Our kitchen's aim is to provide fantastic fresh tasty food created with as much local produce as possible, with an elegant and relaxed atmosphere.

    Went for Sunday roast No Yorkshire Pudding run out of cauliflower cheese the quality of the meat was excellent but again just because they say the oven had a problem there was NO Yorkshire Pudding

    Hi Mark, thank you for leaving us this review, we apologize for not having Yorkshire puddings on this occasion however we encountered a problem with the oven so we were unable to make more but are sorry for the inconvenience.

    Sunday carvery extremely good. Very enjoyable could possibly have had a better table as tucked in by the door with people constantly coming in

    All the waiters were outstanding and very friendly, but the chef serving the Carvery would please customers by smiling back a little, plus not sharply ask me "what do you want" which I replied what do you have? My meat choice was placed on a "cold" plate, then I helped myself to the veg on offer. By the time I got back to my seat I asked my partner how she found the "Happy Chef" as she went up before me so one of us stayed with the dog. She said the same, almost came across as cold as his plates, and certainly appears not to enjoy his job. My dinner was barely warm from touching the cold plate, and when the smiling waiter asked if everything was alright, I asked him to touch the meat I held up with a fork which he said "hmm just warm sorry" When I went to pay I thought the manager would appreciate some feedback, but when I told him all that had happened his response was. "Yes the plates should have been hot so sorry about that, but we have been serving these roasts for 30 years." I took that as we don't need your feedback thank you very much, and with that remark I paid for the meals. I then felt it pointless to mention the roast potatoes so dry with skins like leather, barely warm carrots, hot runner beans, cold cauliflower, cold shrivelled up Yorkshire's my partner left that I have a photo of, but on on a plus note, hot-ish mash with it sitting off the cold plate surface. The place is very busy so this cannot be the normal standard or it would be empty. I guess it was just our bad luck the chef had an off day, and the manager wasn't really in the mood to use his people skills to assure me he appreciated the feedback. We left there bitterly disappointed, as through health issues we have not been out for a great Sunday Roast for many years. We leave your beautiful island tomorrow with some wonderful memories along with thoughts of all the great meals we've also enjoyed all week, sadly all apart from one.

    We went for a meal there for the first time in many years and were very impressed withe the staff, food and ambience. We arrived a little early but our booked table was ready and waiting, and the staff were not the least bit phased. Unfortunately our table was by a door into another room where a group were being extremely loud. We asked if we could be moved somewhere quieter. In less than a minute with no fuss we had moved. Our orders were taken and our drinks arrived promptly, sadly my glass of red wine had wine both inside and outside of the glass, and my first sip lead to some dripping onto my light coloured trousers. (Not happy) The meal was superb for both of us, beautifully cooked, well presented and all the individual flavours came through. Once we had moved, the ambience was lovely and peaceful, relaxed, the staff didn't keep checking everything was ok which I appreciated. There was no background music to jarr so we enjoyed the whole experience. Apart from the spilt wine the whole evening was faultless.

    We had a lovely meal at The Chequers. The food, as usual, was superb. The staff were friendly and efficient. We eat here regularly and always have a good experience.

    Visited during a trip to the island and we were recommended this restaurant by so many people so we had to try it.. The food was amazing, some of the best that we've had in a long time! It definitely did not disappoint. The only issue was that we made some changes to some of the food (i.e. adding things to dishes as per the menu, at an extra charge) and these weren't added. We had a feeling that something would be forgotten as the waitress didn't write anything down when we ordered. When the food came, and we realised, we did wait about 5 minutes for someone to come over so that we could say something, not eating parts of our meal so that we could let them know, but unfortunately nobody came over to check in throughout the whole of the main. There was nobody around to try and say something and nobody at the bar either. We decided to just eat what we had and say something if we were charged for the extras, which we weren't, so the changes just weren't communicated with the kitchen. It wasn't make or break as the food was still delicious and enjoyable, it was just a bit disappointing that we didn't get what we'd ordered and no easy opportunity to try and make things right at the time. Definitely still recommend and we would definitely return.

    Would not come again even if you paid me, web site is very misleading as to quality of both food and venue.

    Excellent food and top service. We had to change our booking twice due to more family members wanting to come and it was so easy to do online. We actually turned up an hour early due to family members arriving early but were still accommodated with no problem. Thankyou so much.
