We're proud of our history without being complacent and we love to see a happy customer. We've always focused on making our pub unique and we are sure you will notice. So pull up a seat, take a tour round our pub and discover what sets us apart from the rest.

** Please note all bookings are for our restaurant, we offer first come first served for drinks in our bar area.

*** Please note due to licencing restrictions under 18's are not permitted in the main bar, we can seat under 18's and over 5's in the restaurant for dining. We cannot allow under 18's in the restaurant after 10pm.

**** As we are a listed building we do not have Accessible toilets on the ground floor.

Some lovely bits but sadly both mains badly overcooked and the only response was - ‘I will let them know’ not really sufficient when the two dishes cost over £100 collectively

Sad to see how much this place has slipped. It used to be so great. They had run out of many of the fish items on the menu (not good for a seafood restaurant). The service was very apathetic. We would have stayed for more than oysters, but it just was not worth staying with the limited options and unhelpful service. Used to be a go to in Edinburgh, but I doubt we will be back.

Fab food, lovely chilled wine, friendly staff & quick lunch service in plenty of time for our trip to the matinee. Can't wait to come back.

The setting is so beautiful but was wasted when the bar is pumping music so loud we struggled to think, were unable to hear each other across a two person table. We had to wait a while to get served, thankfully the server came over just before a large table made their order. He had oysters and Cullen skink. Both were fine. I had fish and chips, the tartare sauce and the pea liquor were the stand outs. We had to wait a while for our plates to be taken away and the server that came to clear them was so grumpy. Dude, don’t work in a busy bar / restaurant on a Saturday night if you’re gonna be a grumpy gus. We shared the cranachan. It was not great. Seemed like they soaked the raspberries in booze, strange choice, it’s usually the cream. And not enough oats, so it was very mushy overall. We asked for the bill and saw there was a 12.5% service charge added. Do you know what, if it wasn’t already added I’d made have just rounded up the bill to the nearest pound. We waited an age for our money to be taken off us, we eventually just went up to the bar to pay it as we walked out. So disappointed in the whole experience. We usually have a great time when we’re stopping in for a drink at the bar.

I always love going to The Cafe Royale its a great place to meet up for a pint of excellent beer or have a delicious meal. Its always excellent which means keep going back!!!

Our dining experience was very good and most of us enjoyed our meal very much. Two diners found their meal to be extremely expensive for what they had. The Turbot meal was disappointing.

The home cooked food was excellent and service was great , we where not rushed , and the interior of the pub was amazing , a nice little place to eat or drink in Edinburgh

The Cafe Royale has a menu that can allow you to control the budget, if it is a special occasion and you decide to go more at the top end it can be expensive.

We arrived 10 minutes early and was told to wait in the bar by a very abrupt waitress- our table was empty. So we got a drink the bar was very full and noisy so we headed back to the restaurant area now 1 minute early and the table was still empty just not laid and made to wait again. The gentleman who came to tell us about the menu was the best member of staff there. After the order was taken we then waited 45 minutes and had to ask for the wine we had ordered which was lukewarm. So had to then ask for it to be chilled. The starters arrived and my husbands food was lukewarm. The main course was nicely cooked but if that was a main portion of mussels then I would hate to see what the starter portion was. We asked for the bill and they had added £17 tip on which we asked to be removed and my husband told them why and they did mutter an apology and walked away. Would not return or recommend in the future .
