Cafe Malta is a neighborhood bistro serving Mediterranean-inspired fare. It combines a warm, relaxed atmosphere with a perpetually creative kitchen.

Named for the island at the crossroads of the Mediterranean, Cafe Malta finds inspiration in the cuisines of Italy, southern France, Morocco, Greece and Spain, and in the Mediterranean tradition, Cafe Malta cooks seasonally and features a variety of local ingredients.

While my three companions were very happy with their meals, my pasta carbonara was inedible and I had to send it back - the pasta was one large glop of tangled undercooked noodles and the sauce was absolutely overwhelming with the pepper. Our server also seemed to be under enthusiastic, but she did take the pasta off the ticket without my even asking.

The special that I thought I was making the reservation was to be offered for dinner only. I feel that open table should have informed me at the time I made the lunch reservation. We ordered from the regular menu but were disappointed that it was the special meal.

This was our first visit to Cafe Malta, and we really enjoyed it. Starting with two dry martinis and the crostini appetizer, we were off to a solid start. For entrees, we had the pork chop and the hanger steak. Both meats were tender and juicy. The wine list offers many choices at fairly affordable prices. The potato galette with the hanger steak was excellent. Our server was attentive and friendly throughout the meal. We’re coming back soon.

We dined at Cafe Malta shortly after it first opened and we’re very pleased with the overall experience. We’ve dined numerous times since then but only a few times each year since there was always something that was missing. When we did return it was always with the hope that it would be better. Our latest visit, over a year later, was also disappointing, service was fine but both meals were really ‘blah’. There was nothing Mediterranean about the dishes. A very bland and dry ravioli stuffed with ground beef with some unappetizing green sauce left much to be desired. The pan seared snapper also quite bland and unremarkable. We want to really like Cafe Malta and dine here on a regular basis but it needs to be better than home cooking.

Terrific Mediterranean / French / Catalan restaurant. Everything we ordered was perfect, from the gazpacho to the salmon salad, the redfish special to the beef ravioli. And that lavender creme brulee....great!

The concept of a Mediterranean menu in Austin is unique. The service is friendly. The decor is reminiscent of an old exotic bistro, somewhere in the Mediterranean belt. But the food service needs serious help. It is unacceptable to have your food come luke warm and the meat tough. My husband’s pork chop came barely warm and dry, well overcooked. The pomme Aligot accompagnement was just barely warm. Whereas the hanger steak in my “bistro” dish order was equally tough and not hot either. The potato gratin was overheated and obviously dry. It it regrettable that there seems to be inadequate supervision in the kitchen to make this wonderful restaurant idea a pleasant experience.

Great little dining place to hit when you need a taste of local. This was good bites that were filling. Had every course here and drink and enjoyed each item. The waitstaff was really working hard and deserves their respect. I don’t know how they did it ALL!! It was nice to be able to talk and enjoy time to eat. Thanks for a good meal.
