What a fun experience. Creative menu with cocktails and food. Personal service. Tasty food. Lots of energy in the room, would love to come back next time in Louisville.

We were excited to try this new restaurant that has had a lot of buzz, but we were somewhat wary because of reviews that noted kinks that needed to be fixed. Kinks still exist and need attention for this promising restaurant to merit a top place in the Louisville dining scene. First, I'll note the positives: 1. The old-fashioned with a dose of Armagnac was outstanding. Very intriguing and tasty. Highly recommended. 2. It is often said that a chef can be judged by how a roast chicken is done. In this case, the Amish chicken is a winner. Truly outstanding. 3. It was very nice to see fois gras on the menu. The presentation was terrific, and the fois gras tasted fabulous. However, the fois gras was stone cold. It must have been seared a long time before it was served. The temperature problem would place this dish in both the positive and negative categories. 4. Although other reviewers knocked the decor, we thought it was fine. Understated but modern and well done. 5. The house salad is different and appealing. I loved it, my wife wasn't as big a fan. Then there were the negatives: 1. Parking is an issue that needs to be addressed. On a Saturday night, there were no spots open on the street anywhere near Byrdie's, so we used the valet parking (only option provided by the restaurant). We were charged for a full day at $25 plus tax and tip despite only being there for less than 2 hours. 2. The chefs must have a very heavy hand with salt. Too much for us! We were chugging water through the night to counter the salt. I even asked for light salt on the fries because I had read a review about excessively salted fries. 3. The french fries rated about a 1 on 10 point scale (10 being best). A French restaurant should be able to produce stellar frites. 4. The noise level is very high. All surfaces are hard including the floors. Could anything be done to dampen the sound? 5. Almost all the dishes are prepared with very rich, intense ingredients.

Service was good. But, the low star reviews I read were spot on. Bottom line is the food wasn’t good. For example, I got the steak frites. The steak was rare (ordered mid rare) and impossible to cut. Fries were horrible - hard and nasty.. Quite disappointed and would not go back.

First, the food is absolutely delicious - appetizers to dessert. Well prepared, layered flavors, and nicely plated. Cocktails were lovely and not skimpy on the alcohol. I liked hearing that the chef would course our meal based on our order and that the server asked if medium-rare was okay for the steak frites order (because that's how the chef wants to cook it and would cringe at any more). I was surprised at a few things that I'm hoping are just newly-opened kinks that will be worked out. One of those things was the fact that they were out of a couple of the menu items. It wasn't late when we dined. Also, apparently there was no special for the evening. I can't recall the last time I went to a fine dining establishment where there was no special(s). A couple of things that are small but really do take a restaurant to the next level: the lighting was too bright for nighttime and the tables maybe a smidge too close together. The other small thing is there was no offer to take our coats. Of course, I don't expect this at all restaurants, but it's particularly nice at a fine dining place. If you have a longer coat, it's awkward to hang it on or even drape it over the back of your chair. We (4) piled ours on the banquette, again a little awkwardly close to the next table. Overall, we had a very lovely meal and will most definitely return. Here's to a new spot in the local dining scene and to (hopefully) an ever growing number of reasons to visit.

This was our first visit to Byrdie's. There was a lot to like, and the food was outstanding. My wife had the steak frites, I had the salmon, we split a salad, and each got dessert. Every dish was delicious and our server was friendly and attentive. They even comped desserts for us when our entrees took a little longer to come out than the kitchen felt was appropriate (we had not even complained). Both of us, however, we're a bit put off by the atmosphere and decor. I guess they are striving for a somewhat minimalist Mid-Century Modern vibe, but it misses. The bare floors, bare tables, metal chairs, and empty walls, combined with lighting that seems a shade too bright, left us feeling as if we were perhaps eating very, very good food in a cafeteria setting. It was just kind of weird. Some small lights/candles on tables, a few pieces of art on the walls -- in short, anything to warm up the vibe -- would be a welcome addition.

Service, urban vibe, greeting excellent. Chicken dish very good. Onion soup was bitter. Steak was room temperature. Pomme frites were overly salted. Dessert was skimpy. Serve brewed coffee. We may try again but we have many other options. $140 for prime rib?

This was our first experience dining here, after being intrigued by the fact that the owners have a Michelin-starred restaurant in Chicago. The menu is short and well thought out, like a typical French bistro. We started with the version of old fashioned, which contained a small amount of Armagnac, and a tasty margarita that featured prominently an orange liqueur. For the opening course, we chose the potato and leek soup and the French onion soup, both of which were satisfying and flavorful. For main courses, the roasted chicken with frites featured a deeply flavored pan sauce. My turbot steak was perfectly cooked and sat atop a version of spinach with cream sauce and roasted marble potatoes. As it was a pre-theatre meal for us, we passed on dessert. Our server was young but very knowledgeable and attentive. It was an overall outstanding experience.
