Welcome to Ukiah Japanese Smokehouse, where Japanese Soul Food meets American BBQ by James Beard Nominated Chef Michael Lewis. “Japanese Smokehouse” is defined as merging Japanese ingredients and flavors with American BBQ techniques, and everything in between.

Menu highlights include light and refreshing dishes such as Wagyu Tataki with house kimchee, yuzu kosho and savory soy or Tuna Takaki with fire roasted peppers + ponzu, to bolder flavors such as Smoked Pastrami Short Rib with toasted rye, fire roasted kimchi + yuzu pickles. We are currently open 5 days a week for Dinner as we navigate after Hurricane Helene.

Please note, our dining room consists of booths, regular tables and high-tops. We will try our best to accommodate you at your prefer location, but sometimes it is not possible due to party size. Our outdoor tables can be requested but not guaranteed when booking on open table.

The food was amazing. Our group had something from all parts of the menu. Drinks were great, food was so delicious and the staff are so friendly. Great service!!

We decided on the chef’s tasting menu to get a little taste of everything and it didn’t disappoint. Amazing flavors and generous portions. The server was knowledgeable and professional. Can’t wait to go back. Very cool ambiance and space too.

If you are looking for a unique place to eat in Asheville, this MIGHT be one to check out. With a very interesting fusion of Japanese and American smokehouse flavors you get some incredible dishes. We ordered the pork bao buns (2 for $15), half smoked chicken, and smoked short rib (1). The short rib was out of this world and would bring us back weekly if the price wasn't $68 for a single rib. The sauces and bread that came with the rib and chicken were also incredible. The prices on the whiskey were very steep and a few of which were absolutely outrageous. I would recommend getting drinks elsewhere before or after. Our waitress was nice but the two other staff members we dealt with were not as friendly. We had a reservation for 5pm. Being our first time at the restaurant we wanted to be a little early just in case. My wife and I have been wanting to go for years and chose this spot for our wedding anniversary this year. We arrived at 4:53 or so and the doors were open, so we walked inside. When we got inside someone who I believe was a manager walked up to us and said "Ukiah is not open for another 7 minutes or so, what can I do for you?" then directed us outside where there was outdoor seating and a bar. When we walked out they then shut the doors behind us. We were a little put off by it and we were not wanting to get anything at the outdoor bar so we just sat by the door at a table and waited. At 5pm the hostess opened the door and then walked back inside without speaking to us or letting us know we could come in. If you are going to tell someone to leave and shut the doors behind them for being 5-7 minutes early, you can at least let them know when they can come inside. We put on our reservation that we were celebrating our anniversary and we were given some free champagne, which we did appreciate very much. We decided we will not be going back, but if you are interested in unique dishes and are willing to pay more, you will be in for some great food.

Ukiah never disappoints. The food is always on point as well as the drinks. Our server, Matt, was great and very attentive. I would 10/10 recommend!!

This was our first visit to Ukiah. We were really excited about the menu and concept but found it disappointing. The crispy pork bao was the best thing we ordered. The crispy rice with salmon was fine but not life changing. The carrot ginger dressing on the bok choy made the dish cold overall, which was unexpected. It also didn’t feel mixed well, as I got several bites that felt like biting into a ginger root. My husband liked the short rib, I thought they were incredibly dry. The sea bass was delicious. The street corn was also rather good. And I got some ramen to go which they boxed with incredible care. Overall, not a knock out of the park but a solid hit to get on first. Would try this place again and see if we or they were just having an off night.
