Originally built in 1832 as the Cross Keys Hotel we have been serving the locals of Blaenavon and beyond for almost 200 years.

Having previously been once before we were looking forward to our meal. Unfortunately this experience was seriously lacking. The food was good, although the T-bone steak was pretty chewy, but the service was abysmal. When the food arrived we were given the smallest portion of chips to share between 3 people. When we asked they said that if we needed any more they’d be able to get us some more. We had also finished our drinks by this point. We asked if we could get more drinks and were told they would get someone to come and take our order. That person never arrived. For 20 minutes we tried to get somebodies attention for drinks and for some more chips. 3 times we managed to catch someone’s eye and they ducked their head and pretended they hadn’t seen us and walked in the opposite direction. In the end we gave up. At no point did any body approach the table to ask how the food was or to see if we wanted drinks. When we had almost finished our meal, the person who had originally brought the food asked if we wanted more chips. When we brought this up while settling the bill the response was ‘We’re really sorry, but we’re a bit short staffed tonight.’ I saw somewhere that anything someone says before the word ‘but’ doesn’t mean anything and that’s how it felt. I’m sorry Butterflies but you charge too much for this to be an acceptable excuse. If you want to charge the prices you do, you should be able to provide the service to match. Really disappointed

Thank you for your review Jay, We apologise you felt the service was below our usual high standards. Unfortunately we were short staffed due to two staff members calling in late with a sickness bug, this placed added pressure on the rest of the team. Nobody was able to cover them at short notice. On reviewing our CCTV we can see that you had a check back as one of the party asked if the burger was supposed to have two burger patties, the waitress checked and she explained that the burger patties are usually 4oz but the butcher had sent us 8oz patties instead. She also asked at this point if she could get you anything else? This was your opportunity to share any other issues with the food. We hope this hasn’t deterred you from visiting again in the future. My family and I enjoy coming here very much. Food is perfect maybe a little too much if that is possible. Service is always outstanding, can't do enough for you. Thoroughly recommend!

First time visiting Butterflies. Had heard so much about it and was not disappointed. From the moment we entered the building we were looked after so well. Nothing was too much trouble The food was stunning. A chateaubriand to share with wonderful sides. Decent wine to go with it Dessert was also delicious Will be back If you get a chance to go make sure you do.

This was one of the most amazing meals I’ve had in my life! We had the signature steak experience and oh my goodness, it was incredible. The meat was cooked beautifully and the sides and sauces complimented so well. The decor and the ambience was relaxing and autumnal, and the staff were so friendly and attentive, will definitely be visiting again!

Absolutely amazing food,6 of us had main and dessert and it was faultless.Lovely atmosphere,friendly staff 10/10,will be booking up again very soon.

Third time coming here and food is exceptional every time! We bring new guests each time because we want to show everyone how excellent it is! We’ve always had steak but tried the trio of beef and a burger this time, all just as tasty! Also accommodated my friend who is gluten and dairy free - she said she has never had such great food suited to her needs! Excellent service as always too! ☺️
