Beneath the pulsing city lies a hidden dining destination. USDA Prime steaks from the finest Black Angus cattle. Bespoke cocktails. A restored Bank Vault from the 1930s. This is Butcher & Banker, a new "steakeasy" at the crossroads of Penn Station, Madison Square Garden, Javits Center and Hudson Yards.

Butcher & Banker is no ordinary steakhouse. A dozen different steaks are on offer, but non-steak eaters will dine exceedingly well here.

Butcher & Banker pays homage to the New Yorker Hotel’s storied history. The New Yorker opened in 1930 at the height of the Great Depression as the then largest hotel in the city. It has attracted a who’s who of entertainers and dignitaries from around the world, including Muhammad Ali, JFK, Joan Crawford and Nikola Tesla.

Beneath the hotel, a bank vault and offices were occupied by the Manufacturers Trust Company until 1980. With the opening of Butcher & Banker, the public can see the vault for the first time in 37 years.

The food was nothing to write home about. The steak was meh and my Caesar salad romaine lettuce had red spots on it. The servers were trying to rush me out as soon as I sat down.

Great ambience in a unique setting, an old bank vault. Food was very good and service was good. Excellent location to have a nice meal before an event at Madison Square Garden. We enjoyed it very much. Try the Proper Manhattan, Excellent drink.

The food was terrible, the room was noisy, and the service was ok. Salmon was strangely mushy, burger was greasy, shishito peppers were described as “blistered” on the menu, but appeared to be deep fried. Dining inside a former bank vault was interesting, but the space contributed to the high noise level. We would never go back.

Great food and service. We were seeing a show nearby and they had us in and out without feeling rushed. Will definitely return!

Food was fine but service was very disappointing. We were neglected most of the time. The wrong side was brought and steak cooked to the wrong temperature but the waiter never came back to check after dropping our entrees, had to flag down the manager to ask them to cook the steak longer. “Girls night out” cocktail was great

Cool spot!! Great service. Great date night spot and the food was delicious. Recommend the oysters Rockefeller.

Food was great, service was not. For a restaurant who hardcore enforces a “dress code” you think the staff would be better. The bus boy was awesome, the hostess was crabby our server was extremely unattentive.

Everything about my night was amazing. We ran a little late but was still seated with no problems or attitude. When seated we met the owner and he was the most pleasant person even wishing me a happy birthday. I tried everyone at my table food and everything was so good and the drinks was drinking okay. No flash photography but all the many pictures I took came out amazing

A unique dining experience in the vault of an old bank! As a starter, we shared the bankers bacon appetizer, which was very tasty! For dinner, we shared the cowboy bone and ribeye, which was done to perfection, and sliced for our convenience. We also shows the duck fat potato cake, which was also delicious. For dessert, we shared the vanilla crème brûlée and really enjoyed that with coffee. . Overall a very lovely dining experience.
