Beneath the pulsing city lies a hidden dining destination. USDA Prime steaks from the finest Black Angus cattle. Bespoke cocktails. A restored Bank Vault from the 1930s. This is Butcher & Banker, a new "steakeasy" at the crossroads of Penn Station, Madison Square Garden, Javits Center and Hudson Yards.

Butcher & Banker is no ordinary steakhouse. A dozen different steaks are on offer, but non-steak eaters will dine exceedingly well here.

Butcher & Banker pays homage to the New Yorker Hotel’s storied history. The New Yorker opened in 1930 at the height of the Great Depression as the then largest hotel in the city. It has attracted a who’s who of entertainers and dignitaries from around the world, including Muhammad Ali, JFK, Joan Crawford and Nikola Tesla.

Beneath the hotel, a bank vault and offices were occupied by the Manufacturers Trust Company until 1980. With the opening of Butcher & Banker, the public can see the vault for the first time in 37 years.

Expensive but probably the best steakhouse experience I had all year and I go to plenty of great steakhouses!

Overall we had a great experience celebrating a birthday here. We were sat at a four top which gave us ample space to enjoy the oysters (delicious) and pork belly (delicious) apps. We opted for cocktails, the Rio Passion was fantastic and my partner enjoyed his mezcal drink. My partnered ordered the rib eye and I had the filet & both dishes were seasoned well and very yummy. The lobster Mac and cheese was probably my favorite part of the meal, creamy and very well seasoned. The courses did take a bit to come out but that’s to be expected for a Friday night! Would definitely come back again :)

It was pretty good. Not exceptional. I’ve had much better food and overall dining experiences for the money. I don’t dine in NYC frequently but 20% automatic gratuity on a party of 5 and pushing bottled water seemed a bit tacky. I have not experienced that anywhere else in the area and I suspect they were hoping I would miss it on the bill and double tip.

Took my kids here for dinner after shopping. Really cool place, average expense for a premium steakhouse in NYC.

Arrived right on time, the hostess panicked, we were the first ones entering the restaurant with a reservation and she said I’m not sure where we’re going to sit you. She said we have another reservation at 7 PM and we need that table…. My reservation was at 4:30 that did not start the mood off the right way that she didn’t want to sit us in on our reservation when we were the first ones in the restaurant . The waiter was nice, professional, but not very friendly. Did not explain the menu at all. Did not ask any questions. Did not make any recommendations. He was there to take our order and give us the check . Food was very good, everyone had steaks they were cooked as we requested. The sides were very good as well and the drinks were also very good. We booked this for the atmosphere. We did get sat inside the bank fault which was a very unique experience.

I was looking for a NYC steakhouse experience and was very happy with Butcher and Banker. Outstanding food, excellent service and very cool ambiance.
