Burdell is a Soul Food restaurant in the Temescal neighborhood of Oakland from James Beard Finalist, Chef Geoff Davis.

Named for and inspired by his maternal grandmother, Burdell, the restaurant reflects her love for well-set tables, entertaining guests, shared meals, and laughter. Burdell is centered on nostalgia, family recipes, thoughtful and sustainable sourcing, and the forgotten impact of Black farming, ranching, fishing, foraging, and culture on American cuisine and hospitality.

The menu highlights farmers and artisans harvesting and creating excellent products around us. Paired with the food is a robust list of wine and beverages from producers around the World-focusing on wines that are farmed and crafted with care and sustainable practices.

    For parties of 7-9, your group will partake in our market-driven, multicourse Family Dinner Menu, instead of our regular a la carte menu. The price per person varies depending on what's on the menu for the week. Menu substitutions to this menu are politely declined. Kindly include any dietary restrictions on your reservation when booking so we can prepare appropriately for your visit (not all dietary restrictions may be accommodated). We do charge a cancellation fee person of $75 per person for no-shows and late cancellations as we hold the physical space in our small restaurant in anticipation of your larger party. As with everything, we charge a 20% service charge that supports livable wages for all staff as well as healthcare.

    Had to wait a bit for our table despite a rest but the service flowed timely once seated. On our 3rd visit and 2nd pre fix experience we thoroughly enjoyed the curated menu. Service was friendly. Tunes took us back in the best way. Amazing way to end the year.

    Burdell concentrates on good food. Not 'grammable food. They never fail to enchant us with subtle and delicious takes on old favorites. Last night's New Year Eve dinner was perfectly proportioned, delicious, and our server was knowlegable and his recommendation on wine was spot-on. We started with caviar, deviled eggs and house-made potato chips a dip. No way to describe how delicious these were. Words and photos really can't describe how the food tastes but it all was an amazing start to the meal. Next we had a refreshing citrus salad, that was the perfect juicy palate cleanser. Then an cheddar biscuit smothered in lobster butter gravy. Yum! The main course was fried chicken, with sweet potato waflles (butter and smoked maple syrup) and a cabbage slaw. Again, words and photos can't capture the flavors of these dishes. Lastly, ice cream sandwiches, one cheddar cookie with peanut butter ice cream (mind-blowingly good with the sweet and savory aspects!) and the second, a chocolate mint. What an amazing meal.

    The food was spectacular, but they had run out of the menu item I wanted, the serving of red wine was small and too cold to taste. The restaurant is still quite new and I hope they can improve their service to match the quality of their food.

    Would have like to have another fish entrée and 1 or 2 "traditional" soul food side dishes. I would advise to review the menu before making a reservation to know what type of a soul food restaurant. This is not your typical soul food in menu selection and price.

    Service was both friendly and professional. Food was good but not as excellent as other visits. At end of evening and middle of holidays, perhaps chef was a little fatigued.

    The service is exceptional. I would have given it five stars, but the flickering lighting detracted from the experience. BBQ Shrimp was like you were in New Orleans, so Yummy. The black cod was amazing. The greens had the right amount of vinegar to heat and were very flavorful. My cousin and I had never tried goose, so we ordered it. While it was good, it was our least favorite. However, the pot pie that came with it was excellent. The cocktails and wine were great. I would go back again.

    Service was super slow for the main course…over 30 minutes between courses. Ended up leaving before desert because pace of meal slowed so much. Not the best experience.

    Very unwelcoming, both atmosphere and personnel. If this is what the chef remembers from growing up going to his grandma’s house I feel sorry for him. Entire party had to be there to be seated which I usually understand but they had required a credit card for the reservation and were going to charge $20 per no show anyway so they weren’t going to lose anything by letting me sit at that four top alone while waiting. When party was all there hostess was nowhere to be found. Upon asking someone walking by were told our table was being set up. Finally were being led to the table that had been set up and when we got there another employee said it was actually for another party that had just arrived. We were then placed at two two-tops that still had to be pushed together and get setups. Food was decent but nothing close to the prices. One of our party received the wrong order and had to wait for the correct order for a bit since it wasn’t just a wrong delivery it hadn’t been ordered. All in all a disappointment from a restaurant Food and a Wine crowned Best New Restaurant of 2024.
