Burdell is a Soul Food restaurant in the Temescal neighborhood of Oakland from James Beard Finalist, Chef Geoff Davis.

Named for and inspired by his maternal grandmother, Burdell, the restaurant reflects her love for well-set tables, entertaining guests, shared meals, and laughter. Burdell is centered on nostalgia, family recipes, thoughtful and sustainable sourcing, and the forgotten impact of Black farming, ranching, fishing, foraging, and culture on American cuisine and hospitality.

The menu highlights farmers and artisans harvesting and creating excellent products around us. Paired with the food is a robust list of wine and beverages from producers around the World-focusing on wines that are farmed and crafted with care and sustainable practices.

We are taking a different approach by highlighting some of Dani's food memories to accompany some of his farming & terroir-driven, amazing wine. Ticket price includes food, wine, tax & service.     For parties of 7-9, your group will partake in our market-driven, multicourse Family Dinner Menu, instead of our regular a la carte menu. The price per person varies depending on what's on the menu for the week. Menu substitutions to this menu are politely declined. Kindly include any dietary restrictions on your reservation when booking so we can prepare appropriately for your visit (not all dietary restrictions may be accommodated). We do charge a cancellation fee person of $75 per person for no-shows and late cancellations as we hold the physical space in our small restaurant in anticipation of your larger party. As with everything, we charge a 20% service charge that supports livable wages for all staff as well as healthcare.

    Excellent all around. Last night of smothered pork chops. Awesome. Turns out the owner delivers food to the tables. FYI… not southern food, Soul food! I’ll be back soon.

    Decided to try the restaurant that replaced one of my favorite breakfast spots in Temescal and was underwhelmed by the food and disappointed with the prices. We got the family shared 4 course meal @ 75/person. The meal included a starter (boiled peanuts) 3 sides (hoppin john, greens and cornbread) with fried pork chops covered with a gravy (which you can only get on the shared meal) and a panna cotta with shaved ice and a few pomegranate seeds for desert. While the descriptions of what was to come was positive the spices and flavor profiles were underwhelming. It seemed that the food was made for people with bland taste buds. There was no flavor of the traditional turkey neck or ham hock in the greens or hoppin john and the gravy poured over the fried pork chops added very little to the flavor profile. All in, I think I will spend less and go to other soul food spots that remind me of what came out of my grandmother kitchen. The best part of the meal was the cornbread which had the right amount of crispiness and sweetness

    Good food and not too full for a Sunday lunch. Group of 5 and we shared the hashbrowns and smoked cod. Had some trouble using the InKind app suggested by the restaurant to pay at the table but it eventually worked when moving closer to the entrance

    The food was spectacular. There are nostalgic touches from the McDonald’s coffee cup to the Mrs buttersworth syrup dispensers. Staff is friendly but direct and overall well priced. Will definitely come back and tell all my friends about it

    The food has been seared into my brain! I cannot get over how delicious the chicken liver mousse & waffles dish was and how delectable the cornbread was. Wow I could live off that cornbread. Seriously, the food was nourishing for my soul.

    We enjoyed the whole experience, starting with the staff greeting us when we checked in. The staff are very well trained and knowledgeable about the restaurants various offerings. The restaurant environment is very inviting, with nice background music at a volume that doesn’t not interfere with conversation. The presentation of the various items we ordered was well done and the food itself was excellent. We will certainly be going back.
