Burdell is a Soul Food restaurant in the Temescal neighborhood of Oakland from James Beard Finalist, Chef Geoff Davis.

Named for and inspired by his maternal grandmother, Burdell, the restaurant reflects her love for well-set tables, entertaining guests, shared meals, and laughter. Burdell is centered on nostalgia, family recipes, thoughtful and sustainable sourcing, and the forgotten impact of Black farming, ranching, fishing, foraging, and culture on American cuisine and hospitality.

The menu highlights farmers and artisans harvesting and creating excellent products around us. Paired with the food is a robust list of wine and beverages from producers around the World-focusing on wines that are farmed and crafted with care and sustainable practices.

Family Dinner Menu

For parties of 7-9, your group will partake in our market-driven, multicourse Family Dinner Menu, instead of our regular a la carte menu. The price per person varies depending on what's on the menu for the week. Menu substitutions to this menu are politely declined. Kindly include any dietary restrictions on your reservation when booking so we can prepare appropriately for your visit (not all dietary restrictions may be accommodated). We do charge a cancellation fee person of $75 per person for no-shows and late cancellations as we hold the physical space in our small restaurant in anticipation of your larger party. As with everything, we charge a 20% service charge that supports livable wages for all staff as well as healthcare.

What a gem of a place. The food was fantastic. Our only little glitch was the timing in between the final course and dessert. Really really delicious. Interesting food.

What an absolutely disappointing experience. We had been looking forward to this reservation for so long. Both the waitress, and the hostess absolutely hate their jobs or their life or both. No smiles, no enthusiasm, absolutely never up sold the menu or had any excitement about the food that was being presented or the wine. Our reservation was at 6:45 PM, we were seated 30+ minutes after that and by the time we were sat, the fried chicken was completely sold out. How do you sell out of an item before the dinner rush? Poor planning on the chef’s part. I will not come back to this restaurant and I am frankly completely shocked that they won restaurant of the year by food and wine magazine. Must’ve been a bribe.

The servers, hostess and bartender were not very friendly or helpful in answering questions about the menu or drinks. The food was ok but nothing shocking. I like how they just charge more for meals and pay their servers a livable wage. Probably won't be returning.

As author of Say Grace and Wipe Yo' Hands: BlackRestaurant.NET Guide to America's Black Restaurants, I monitor more than 2,000 food businesses nationally and Burdell certainly warrants the Food & Wine 2024 Best Restaurant of the Year. It was a delight to have Geoff Davis personally come out and apply the sauce on the smothered pork chops as we saw the love he puts into his craft while honoring his family. As a North Carolinian, the Cheerwine was a cultural touchstone. His courage to open a first class establishment in Oakland in the face of a wave of negative publicity should be rewarded with massive patronage.

I really, really wanted to love this place. The folks were nice (despite being crazy busy). It was loud and crowded, but I expected that with all the restaurant buzz. I really liked the decor, especially the photos by the front door. My biggest disappointment involved the wine. I purchased a $24 glass of wine and found a fruit fly in it—which is totally fine—that happens. I let our waitstaff know and she apologized and offered to bring me a new glass. 10 minutes later, I had a new glass and told her that I appreciated it. However, they charged me for both glasses. So, I paid $48 for a glass and a few sips of wine with a bug in it. That just felt unkind and we left very disappointed.

One of the best meals I have had - so good that despite the terrible service I am still going to rate it 5 stars. But yes, some of the worst service I’ve had a restaurant - we were seated 45 mins after our reservation with no offer of a drink/appetizer for our inconvenience. Service was slow and because 20% tip is already included in the bill, it felt like our waiter was simply tolerating us rather than serving us. He was very slow and took his time. Water came out 20 mins after we were seated. Forgot we ordered a bottle of wine, which was brought out after our appetizers after I had to remind him. We once asked if we could get a salad without oysters to accommodate a vegetarian and he said “we will see how it comes out, maybe it will maybe it won’t?” It ended up coming with the oysters on the side so it was fine but such an odd answer. Anyways I still loved the food - so much so that it managed to elevate my mood after the bad service.

Always exceptional food and friendly staff. They were very busy so the service was a bit slow to start but it wasn’t a problem, just happy to be there.

Fantastic all the way around. Super friendly staff. Fun decor. Every bite was delicious. Plus they acknowledged our special occassion in a thoughtful but touching way.
