Burdell is a Soul Food restaurant in the Temescal neighborhood of Oakland from James Beard Finalist, Chef Geoff Davis.

Named for and inspired by his maternal grandmother, Burdell, the restaurant reflects her love for well-set tables, entertaining guests, shared meals, and laughter. Burdell is centered on nostalgia, family recipes, thoughtful and sustainable sourcing, and the forgotten impact of Black farming, ranching, fishing, foraging, and culture on American cuisine and hospitality.

The menu highlights farmers and artisans harvesting and creating excellent products around us. Paired with the food is a robust list of wine and beverages from producers around the World-focusing on wines that are farmed and crafted with care and sustainable practices.

    For parties of 7-9, your group will partake in our market-driven, multicourse Family Dinner Menu, instead of our regular a la carte menu. The price per person varies depending on what's on the menu for the week. Menu substitutions to this menu are politely declined. Kindly include any dietary restrictions on your reservation when booking so we can prepare appropriately for your visit (not all dietary restrictions may be accommodated). We do charge a cancellation fee person of $75 per person for no-shows and late cancellations as we hold the physical space in our small restaurant in anticipation of your larger party. As with everything, we charge a 20% service charge that supports livable wages for all staff as well as healthcare.

    Excellent food, service and overall experience. Sat the Bar (group of two), which was great - lots of space for several plates Will definitely visit again with friends.

    Food was excellent but we didn’t get seated until 10 or so minutes after our reservation slot time, and it took awhile - maybe 20 minutes - after we got seated for someone to come and take our drink and food order. There was another long lag time between our appetizers and main dish, maybe another 20 minutes.

    Starting from our check in, the customer service acted ambivalent at best and irritated by our questions at worst. We stood at the register for over 10 min waiting for an update on our table already after our reservation time. We were lead to our table which was still being set by another server who very rudely asked us to move away from her because we were crowding her (we were not crowding her at all). When she finished setting table she wondered off with no invitation to sit or update in what we were to do. We waited few mins standing aimlessly in the middle of restaurant until our server came over and invited us to sit. Our server interrupted us mid-conversation several times with no compunction with no situational awareness. We were engaged in a discussion about our friends recent cancer diagnosis and had to stop several times for ridiculous questions. Lastly, we had only been sitting at the table for 1 hour and 45 min when the host asked if we could let them seat someone else at table cause we had used up our time (there were other patrons still seated when we left that had been seated when we arrived). It was one of the rudest dining experiences. The food was very good, some entrees excellent.

    One of the best places I have ever been. The food to die for. The service the best. My mom had an amazing birthday. I honestly don’t know how they do it but in a full restaurant I felt tended to with a personalized experience not lost in crowd not looking for my server. Amazing stellar restaurant!!!

    We had indifferent service, we couldn't hear each other across the table because we were under a speaker for the music, the food wa ust ok, except the duck was really good.

    Everything we ordered was delicious! Absolute standouts were the oyster & heirloom tomato salad, salmon & okra, and cornbread! What Chef Geoff does with old standbys is innovative yet never contrived, with every dish (as well the cocktails) being perfectly balanced. The retro vibe felt more welcoming than kitschy, and our server was extremely knowledgeable and just attentive enough. She felt like an old friend (Thanks, Mo!) Also props for an extensive winelist! We’re already planning for next time!!

    Never misses. Third time and the menu was different each time with some classics. Amazing wine selection and chef delivered meal is such a personal touch .
