Le Blackfriars a été élu meilleur restaurant aux North East England Tourism Awards en 2013. Occupant un ancien couvent médiéval chargé d'histoire, fondé en 1239, le restaurant a servi de réfectoire pour les moines, ce qui en fait une des plus anciennes salles de restauration construite au Royaume-Uni. Ce restaurant de 72 places sert un menu de style britannique classique et copieux, à base de produits de saison provenant des fermes et des marchés locaux, accompagnés d'une grande carte des vins primés. Il comporte également une salle de réception pouvant accueillir 50 personnes et un atelier pour 12 personnes proposant une large gamme de plats. Le Blackfriars a récemment été élu « Meilleur dîner du dimanche à Newcastle » par les lecteurs des journaux The Observer et Metro. Il a également obtenu une récompense AA dans le classement des guides Which, Good Food Guide, Hardens et Michelin.

There’s an abundance of great produce all around us; mouth-watering aged beef, award-winning cheeses, really good organic vegetables, super-fresh fish and local beers. Considered an ancestor of traditional American soul food – think jambalaya or gumbo - Nigerian cuisine offers a bright and colourful selection of meat and vegetable dishes that tantalise your senses. Nigerians are known for their love of parties and gatherings, thus Nigerian dishes are designed to celebrate life! On this session our chef will introduce you to some authentic Nigerian ingredients and cookery techniques so you can celebrate the iconic culinary gems of Nigeria and West African cookery right at home! You can enjoy homemade sandwiches and pastries, freshly made scones and cakes along with a cup of tea or glass of fizz either in our King's Suite, Cloister Garden, Parlour Bar or Restaurant. Please let us know of any dietaries or allergies upon booking. We're currently unable to accommodate a vegan afternoon tea. Available on Fridays and Saturdays between 2.45-4.00pm. Please note; Afternoon Tea may be served in our King's Suite, which is located on the first floor. If you require a more accessible table, please get in touch to let us know.

Whether it be the classic, traditional Catalonian tapas or a local Geordie twist on the popular Spanish snack, everyone seems to love those beautiful little lovingly-made mouthfuls washed down with a glass of local wine – a perfect snack for enjoying whilst propping up a bar on Barcelona’s Calle Blai. Join us at Blackfriars where you will sample a selection of wines from around the Spanish speaking world. During the two-hour tasting, led by our wine expert, you will learn how to taste wine like the experts do, sampling wines from Spain and Latin America paired with a selection of tapas from Blackfriars’ kitchen.

Visited Newcastle a number of times but how have we missed Blackfriars’s?!? Fantastic unpretentious restaurant with great food, attentive staff and wonderful ambience - if you come to Newcastle you must try to visit

A wonderful dinning experience. I had the catch of the day sea trout which was perfect in every aspect. My only enquiry is the sea trout season does not start until April. How was it the catch of the day

The Winter Menu 2025 was really delicious. Allergy orders are taken by a manager, the allergen matrix is super clear to read to easily identify swaps. We had pre-ordered drinks for our arrival which took a short while to arrive, however the wine pairings for our starters/mains were prompt and accompanied by a knowledgeable explanation of origin. A nice chilled out vibe for lunch and fantastically great food. Hope to visit again to sample dinner some day!

Fantastic time with Emma leading our cookery class in the cookery school. Very informative (and delicious) with things to take away at the end. you get a drink on arrival and drink with your food after you have finished cooking also which made the whole experience even better. I would highly recommend this experience and looking forward to our next opportunity to drop in.
