Expect the Unexpected at Black Walnut. Concept owned by Chef Andrew Black – a 2023 James Beard Award winner for Best Chef Southwest, and a 2022 James Beard Award semifinalist for Outstanding Chef. Blending American cuisine with the neighborhood’s cultural history, the menu is eclectic and vibrant. The pairing of global street cocktails from Bali to Brazil adds to its culinary spirit, and a spacious patio makes this our community’s new favorite place to come together. I have heard great things about Chef Black's restaurants. We were excited to try it. I noticed the space was a little weird... Not sure of a better way to explain it. It wasn't a cohesive design. The chair didn't feel nice enough for the space, and layout felt cavernous. Tough to describe. After being seated, the waitress came to explain the menu. She noted they were out of 3 or so items. We had some questions about some of the other items on the menu. She didn't seem too knowledgable of the menu (unable to explain what something was). The arrangement of the menu wasn't starter / soup / entree, but more of a family style. We weren't made aware of this as the waitress stated that top items were starters. Note the menu was laid out by flavor profile, not courses. The waitress seemed to be trying hard, but I really think this falls on the management as it was more of a training issue, not an effort issue. We ordered the drum sticks, bread/cheese dish, house salad, and curry. The majority of the food was good, but the curry was definitely lacking flavor and seemed to be under seasoned. I'm unsure if we will be back.

We had a wonderful experience at Black Walnut! The food was delicious with interesting flavor profiles. Staff was attentive. The portions are meant to be shared. We will be back.

After having a great meal at Black Walnut when we (4 of us) visited OKC last year, this was a huge disappointment. The two fish meals were fine, but the strip steak was poor quality (silver running through the middle so that my husband had to search for edible pieces. But the biggest problem was the lamb ordered by our friend. He ordered it MR and it came out well done. The server took it back while we slowly ate our meals which became cold as we waited 20 min for the lamb to then come out barely pink. It had been overcooked again. At that point, we were done. We all eat at fine restaurants on a regular basis and never send anything back unless it's cooked that wrong. Then the server said she could do nothing about it on the bill and we had to speak to someone else. That was appalling for this level restaurant. Finally the GM came out and offered a dessert. No, we did not want a dessert. The entire dining experience had been bad. He finally agreed to take it off the check. We will be back in. OKC again, but we will not eat there. No one should have to push for an adjustment on the bill when the food didn't even come out right the 2nd time.

Really enjoyed the place. Despite some of the negative reviews we had a great experience. Ended up filling up on appetizers and then having desserts. Lots of food and really good. Personally I think the wine was overpriced but I still enjoyed it and the evening in general. Will come back.

The food and our waitress was wonderful. We had such an enjoyable evening. It was pretty noisy but there was a large group behind us. And they were having fun too!
