Basil is the realization of the lifelong dream of Henry and Chai Eang, brothers who immigrated to the United States from turbulent 1970s Cambodia. From speaking not a word of English, to creating award-winning dining experiences throughout the Carolinas, the duo has married hard work with passion to bring authentic Thai cuisine to their new home.

Since opening the first Basil in Charleston to rave reviews, several trendy locations have followed over the last dozen years. Basil’s infectious atmosphere centers around a dynamic kitchen as the sound of heat to metal, blade to board and liquid to flame resonate throughout the restaurant. Each space stylishly appointed to reflect the culture and energy of the noteworthy Southern cities they inhabit.

Until last night, this was my favorite Thai establishment. My birthday was ruined by this experience. Our food sat in the window forever. The table that was seated after us with the same lethargic indifferent waiter, Devan, was getting up and leaving by the time our food arrived. My dish was missing the main ingredient. I ordered the Basil stir fry with pork and there was no basil in it. Asked the waiter about it and he said, “I’ll get you some.” It came in a tiny cup dish and was covered with black spots. I only ate half my meal and brought the rest home. After I got home, I spent the rest of the evening in the bathroom ill. Never going back.

We were seated right away and brought drinks and our appetizer promptly, but then had to wait 40 minutes to get our food. We then had to ask for our check right away and rushed through eating to get to a show on time. The food was fine, but not great.

everything from start to finish was spectacular! we were seated right away, the waiter was very polite and the menu selections were great . Our food was absolutely delicious… Top notch experience all the way!

We have eaten here in the past and it's been relatively good. Last night - not so much. After getting us some water our server disappeared for about 10 minutes - when she got back to our table she made some reference to a lost order or delivery person - hmmm - we weren't lost - we were abandoned at our table. The chicken satay we ordered was good. But the main dishes, a curry and seafood dish were just bad or mediocre. The seafood dish was overcooked. The jasmine rice was delivered to our table about 10 minutes before our dishes showed up and was cold and hard (undercooked?). The green curry was mostly broth. And lastly, when paying the bill, the server rang us up on the credit card device, handed it to my wife to finish processing and then promptly left. We had to wait another 5 minutes before she returned to pick up the device and get us a receipt. A person can only take so much abuse before you just say "never again".
