After hearing so much about Baserri, we were excited for our Friday lunch while visiting from London. The atmosphere was undeniably stylish, with decor and furnishings that made the restaurant feel warm and inviting. The service team deserves high praise – they were attentive, knowledgeable, and genuinely dedicated to making our experience enjoyable. If only the food had matched their excellence. Our starters set the tone. The octopus in paprika, which should have been simple yet flavourful, was sadly overcooked, lukewarm, and likely reheated – not a promising start. While we did enjoy two very nice croquettes (not all doom and gloom!), it would have been nice to have someone check on us. Then came a theatrical presentation of a truffle. Our server, bless her, informed us, “This is the truffle you will be having; chef would like you to admire it before it goes on your starter.” It felt like something from a comedy sketch. The truffle sat on display only to be whisked away after three shavings over a bowl of mushrooms on soggy bread. For £22, I could have done without the pantomime entirely. Our mains sadly confirmed our suspicions. I had the Iberico pork with Brussels sprouts and parsnip mash, while my partner chose a sea bream special. My plate was a range of temperatures – stone-cold mash, burnt yet raw Brussels sprouts, and pork topped with an oily, chewy layer of fat pretending to be “crackling.” Two mouthfuls in, I couldn’t go any further. My partner’s sea bream looked impressive but was overcooked, so he left it. We also shared a side of greens, which sounded like wilted seasonal greens on the menu but was closer to a supermarket bagged salad – by this point, not a surprise. When our lovely server noticed the barely touched plates, she asked if everything was okay. I explained, but there was no response from the kitchen – no apology, no attempt to make things right. For the price (£160), you’re better off trying other places where flavour, not theatre matter.

The restaurant is tricky to get a booking, so we were very excited to go. Our table was still occupied when we arrived, we sat at the bar, which is a bit cramped as it's next to the kitchen access. The bar man asked me what gin I would like but didn't know what gins they stocked. The staff were pleasant but not familiar with the wine menu and took time to take our order. The tapas starters were great, but the mains were nothing special. The desert was nice. Overall, we did enjoy the meal, and the staff apologised for the wait and errors they made, which we appreciated, and we liked the meal. It just wasn't amazing.
