Bar Chelou is Pasadena’s first true neo-bistro, a casual, convivial space that is both a distillation of Chef Doug Rankin's broad gastronomic interests and a deeply personal expression of his individualistic style. 'Chelou' (French slang for ‘strange’ or ‘unexpected’) is both the name and unifying theme of the restaurant, which draws from a range of culinary traditions and service styles to create something personal, novel and fun.

The restaurant is located within the Pasadena Playhouse complex.

NEED TO KNOW
for wine brought into the restaurant is $30 per 750ml bottle with no limit; we do not offer corkage for wines featured on our wine list. Liquor is not permitted to be brought into the restaurant.

Ample parking is available on surrounding streets and at several paid lots within a one-block radius. We recommend parking in the municipal lot directly behind the building we share with the Playhouse or at the underground lot just across the street

Incredibly expensive for what is delivered. Items not described well on the menu and it’s impossible to ask a server to detail every one so be prepared for surprises…..such as cold clams on clam toast…..really? Cold clams have no flavor….so all you tasted was cold boiled leeks. Or lamb ribs that were described by server as “rack of lamb”. You would think for $62 without any accompanying sides you’d get a nice rack of lamb. But no….we were served a jenga-style stack of fatty, greasy lamb….not a cut up rack…..covered in cilantro (not disclosed on menu or by staff) so all you tasted was cilantro. Unfortunately, my wife can’t eat cilantro so it went back. Oh…..did I mention the cheapest glass of red wine was $17 for a 3rd rate non- descript Bordeaux. I’m my. All items seem to be prepared and ready to go for a quick pre-theatre turnover. They wouldn’t even honor a request to leave coleslaw on the side of a pork chop entree. They insisted it had to go on top of the chop because that’s the way it was already made.

Delicious cocktails with a slightly trippy effect. Creative & unexpected combinations in each dish. The potatoes & the grilled Squid are exquisite. Busy wait staff bring things quickly.

Very attentive service, we had informed of tickets to musical afterwards and they were on top of it. Food was excellent and amazing ambiance

Stellar food, some of the most interesting cocktails we've had recently, and competent service made it a great evening. Ambience is affect by the fact that it's in the old Trejo's Tacos space that's a bit cavernous, and the noise level was more than "energetic." A little more softening decor could improve both issues. But still, a memorable meal.

Overall the food and service was good except for the Scallop seemed a bit "overfishy" and they sat me and my brother in the very back corner next to a back service entrance in which I normally wouldn't mind but it was a special occasion for us(24th Kidney transplant anniversary:) and I stated that in our reservation, also the time was at 5:45 so early dinner...our server was good and sweet though I just don't think they appreciated or even noticed the occasion. Was hoping for a little special treatment like a congrats from the host or even a lil free desert kinda thing but just an acknowledgement would have been fine. If I was going to an event at the Playhouse I would probably go back cause like I said for the most part the food and service was good.

The food was good, the ambiance is very romantic and chill but sadly the service was not so good. What threw me off was how the server was not taking our order until we had everything ready to order and was very pushy about that. We wanted to put in a few starters and a couple of mains to share and see where we're at to order more but he kept saying no no no which I thought was very weird. The portions of the plates were on the smaller side. For example the "cheese" was literally 3 slices of the different cheeses. so with 6 people we had to order 3-4 of the same item to be able to share. But their cocktails were great.

This was my first time to Bar Chelou and we were celebrating a friend's birthday, who had been there several times. The food was excellent and our server, Clementine, had a very uncanny resemblance to Caitlin Clark. My only "gripe" was the fact that we were charged for the sorbet, which was my friend's birthday "cake." Most restaurants do not charge for a birthday cake, etc.
