Bar Chelou is Pasadena’s first true neo-bistro, a casual, convivial space that is both a distillation of Chef Doug Rankin's broad gastronomic interests and a deeply personal expression of his individualistic style. 'Chelou' (French slang for ‘strange’ or ‘unexpected’) is both the name and unifying theme of the restaurant, which draws from a range of culinary traditions and service styles to create something personal, novel and fun.

The restaurant is located within the Pasadena Playhouse complex.

NEED TO KNOW
for wine brought into the restaurant is $30 per 750ml bottle with no limit; we do not offer corkage for wines featured on our wine list. Liquor is not permitted to be brought into the restaurant.

Ample parking is available on surrounding streets and at several paid lots within a one-block radius. We recommend parking in the municipal lot directly behind the building we share with the Playhouse or at the underground lot just across the street

Lovely restaurant with great food and good wine, but a bit too loud for 4. It is difficult to hear each other talk. Perfect location next to the Pasadena Playhouse.

Got there early and were seated right away. It was quiet to start but got noisy once room filled up with people. Food was well prepared and presented. Wonderful flavors if only a small selection. We had spinach, crispy potatoes, tomato bread. And carrots with shoestring potatoes

This was our first visit to Bar Chelou after having read many positive reviews about the establishment. We came at an early hour, and as the room filled up, it became increasingly loud with music in the background. Go ONLY if you can stand the noise. Our server, Obe, was fabulous. Obe accommodated us at every step and remained unobtrusive. We tried several dishes, almost all of which were superb. The only dish that we thought was way over the top in terms of preparation and cost ($47) was the trout. It came swimming in a very rich sauce that should have been drizzled--not poured onto the tender and delicate dish. The cost of the dish cannot be justified (we didn't have a menu in front of us when we ordered it--had we seen the price, we would have skipped it). The glass of Sangiovese that was suggested was one of the best I ever had the pleasure of drinking. Will we return? Yes, but we will try and hide in a corner. Tip, keep a menu at your table as you order.

We had SUCH a great meal and a wonderful time! Our server, Sean, was so kind and knowledgeable and every single thing we ordered (food, cocktail and wine) was completely delicious and unique. We ordered a variety of vegetarian options and, honestly, I have never had a meal with so many distinct and complex flavor profiles that all magically worked together. Each item was it's own flavor bomb. Hot tip: if you enjoy bread (and toerate gluten) do not miss the pan de cristal! It's like a cross between french bread and a croissant! Dessert was a transcendent lemon semifreddo with a crunchy cookie on top - if they have it when you go (and you love lemon), definitely order this too!! It's a beautiful, dimly lit dining room. We had an early reservation and the space was sparsely populated and very quiet. As the evening wore on and it filled up, the volume got louder, but it was never oppressive or problematic. The price point is on the medium-high end for small portions, but the quality and creativity of their food and drinks is so amazing that I will gladly come back again and again! We loved everything about the experience!

We've been meaning to check out this place for quite some time, and a business meeting fit the bill. The staff was very attentive and helpful with their accommodations and food description. The menu is small, but very unique and beautifully prepared and presented. The duck was exceptional, as it was very meaty and moist, with delicious dressings. But everything we tried was fantastic. The room was quite lively and loud to start with, but by the time we left, had become calm and quiet. Everyone was no doubt busy enjoying their meals. The menu is a Spanish/French hybrid that represents the Basque region of the Pyrenees mountains that divides them. Each dish brought an unexpected element. Looking forward to returning, and having our leftovers for lunch! 😋

The food was AMAZING! The ingredients and flavors were surprising and delectable. Really enjoyed the carrot salad! Ambiance was great, food came out very quickly, and the service was excellent.

The food was exceptionally well prepared, service was attentive and cordial, and the restaurant is located in a nice neighborhood next to the Pasadena Playhouse.
