Bar Chelou is Pasadena’s first true neo-bistro, a casual, convivial space that is both a distillation of Chef Doug Rankin's broad gastronomic interests and a deeply personal expression of his individualistic style. 'Chelou' (French slang for ‘strange’ or ‘unexpected’) is both the name and unifying theme of the restaurant, which draws from a range of culinary traditions and service styles to create something personal, novel and fun.

The restaurant is located within the Pasadena Playhouse complex.

NEED TO KNOW
for wine brought into the restaurant is $30 per 750ml bottle with no limit; we do not offer corkage for wines featured on our wine list. Liquor is not permitted to be brought into the restaurant.

Ample parking is available on surrounding streets and at several paid lots within a one-block radius. We recommend parking in the municipal lot directly behind the building we share with the Playhouse or at the underground lot just across the street

Such a treat. Every dish perfection. Fresh, delicious, exalted and original. Noise level greatly reduced due to ceiling modification which we appreciated. Service wonderful. Ask your service person for wine recommendations. You’ll taste a couple of amazing options. Great vibe. This establishment is one of my all time favorites.

Every bite was perfect. Relaxed, low-key environment. Welcoming to families, couples, friends. Nice place to celebrate something. A truly lovely evening.

We ordered all courses, cocktails and wine. Everything was great the wait staff were helpful making choices and pairings. Great spot for a unique delicious dining experience

The food was delicious and flavorful. Harper provided great food service; attentive but not intrusive. Crispy potatoes, lamb chops and the asparagus were especially delicious. Highly recommend this place and will be back!

Love the food here. This was our second visit, and it was even better than the first time. We loved every single dish, even desert, everything was wonderfully balanced and rich in flavor. Holy crap the crispy potatoes were so good, those required seconds lol

Exceptional service and fantastic food options with shared plates offering high quality food. We particularly enjoyed the carrots, tempura asparagus, spinach, cauliflower and the sumptuous Iberica pork chops and Duck leg. All expertly prepared and delicious. The finishing touch were the incredible deserts including the lemon and banana bar. Overall a great experience.

What a gem! Amazing food and beverages. We will be back for sure. Literally next door to the Pasadena Playhouse, so if you’re seeing a show it’s perfect.
