Bar Chelou is Pasadena’s first true neo-bistro, a casual, convivial space that is both a distillation of Chef Doug Rankin's broad gastronomic interests and a deeply personal expression of his individualistic style. 'Chelou' (French slang for ‘strange’ or ‘unexpected’) is both the name and unifying theme of the restaurant, which draws from a range of culinary traditions and service styles to create something personal, novel and fun.

The restaurant is located within the Pasadena Playhouse complex.

NEED TO KNOW
for wine brought into the restaurant is $30 per 750ml bottle with no limit; we do not offer corkage for wines featured on our wine list. Liquor is not permitted to be brought into the restaurant.

Ample parking is available on surrounding streets and at several paid lots within a one-block radius. We recommend parking in the municipal lot directly behind the building we share with the Playhouse or at the underground lot just across the street

Food was amazing. We had the scallop appetizer and the clam toast, both are a must for seafood lovers. The carrots were amazing. The trout and the pork chop were on point. Excellent food. All of our orders were exceptional. Would recommend to a friend.

Great restaurant off the Pasadena Playhouse. Atmosphere was very lively and energetic, on the louder side. Ingredient were very fresh but all of our 5 dishes (Burrata Toast, Salad Verte, Carrots, Pork Chop, Duck)ordered were heavy on vinegar.

Bar Chelou is a great dinner spot. Located off the courtyard of the Pasadena Play house it has great ambience. The wait staff are friendly and we were well attended. We ordered the trout and pork chop. Both were good and served with special sauces.

A very pretty restaurant with delicious food and friendly, attentive service. Wish there was more soft seating/.. request the banquette.

Food was good, not great, really salty. While we told all dishes were meant to be smaller shared plates, the prices for the small amount of food was excessive. The man who assisted in the wine selection (they called him a sommelier but that was not confirmed) pointed out the three most expensive bottles on the menu as his recommendation. The table next to us ordered two full bottles. We watched this sommelier open a new bottle of wine and the back back counter, pour himself a glass and then take the bottle to a table for the "full" bottle they ordered.

Love Bar Chelou. The people working there are always so welcoming and in a good mood. Makes me think it’s a nice place to work. And I’m sure that has to do with the quality, it must be a pleasure to serve the food at Bar Chelou.

Our experience was masterful! The food was EXCELLENT! Drinks were top notch. Ambience is a mix of retro/art deco/chic. And our server (Garrett), was a dream. We started off with the burrata toast (… it’s a MUST)! Followed by crispy potatoes, the carrots (non traditional approach … think shaved carrot salad. Good but different), snap peas (chef’s kiss), cauliflower (so so good, but small), then our main dishes which included the trout (beautifully presented + so so good… the sauce is to die for), the duck leg (my fave dish of the evening!) and lamb ribs (seasoned to perfection and perfect for sharing). All of these dishes were beautifully presented and so incredibly tasty. I’d recommend Bar Chelou for a date night, a celebration, happy hour.. everything and anything! As a mama of littles, I always like to provide commentary re suitability for kids and given the vibe of this restaurant, I would say it isn’t suitable for young children.
