Bar Chelou is Pasadena’s first true neo-bistro, a casual, convivial space that is both a distillation of Chef Doug Rankin's broad gastronomic interests and a deeply personal expression of his individualistic style.

'Chelou' (French slang for ‘strange’ or ‘unexpected’) is both the name and unifying theme of the restaurant, which draws from a range of culinary traditions and service styles to create something personal, novel, and fun.

The restaurant is located within the Pasadena Playhouse complex. If you plan to visit the Playhouse after dinner, please book a 5:30p reservation to ensure ample timing for your dinner. We also offer concession cocktails before a showing and during intermission.

NEED TO KNOW
Wine corkage is $30 per 750ml bottle with no limit; we do not offer corkage for wines featured on our wine list.

Ample parking is available on surrounding streets and at several paid lots within a one-block radius.

Gift cards are available for purchase on our website.

Presentation and food items excellent. Steak Tartare is not on a lot of menus. This was most different and best tastes plus the seasoned flat bread served with it excellent. Our server was informative about wine and food. Had not been back to restaurant for a while and will go back sooner.

The crispy potatoes are to die for, we ordered one plate and ordered it again later! verde salad tangy and tasty. We loved each and every dish!

The food was phenomenal - it’s refreshing to see a restaurant pay attention to their vegetable offerings. The crispy potatoes were out of this world and is one of my favorite potato dishes ever! The rainbow trout was also delicious and I savored every bite! Our server was awesome and helped make the night feel special.

Absolutely outstanding in every way! Exceeded our expectations - which were high to begin with. Gorgeous ambience, impeccable service and some of the best food that I have had in LA in years! Can’t wait to return. Kudos Bar Chelou team!

Food was really average and really expensive. Also natural wine only which is not great. Ambiance is great but probably not worth the trip out to Pasadena.

My wife and I had been looking forward to trying this spot for some time. We’ve heard so much about it! Everything was exceptional! The food was absolutely delicious! The service was great as well as the ambiance. We can’t wait to go back!!!

While we were waiting for our party to gather, the barmen made the best skinny margarita I had ever tried. The food and service were great, but the portions were too small. If you are hungry, you need to order the whole menu or double of dishes to feed your hunger. 😁😁

Fabulous experience! I couldn’t tell you what my favorite dish was because they were all so delicious, thoughtful and well-executed! Interesting mix of flavors, cuisine and technique as well; a unique experience to be sure! I will most certainly be back!

Bar chelou is one of my new favorite places and I have been bragging about it an embarrassing amount to friends for the past few months. I have been there now 3 times and took my friend for the first time this week. We decided to sit in bar area and to be honest I was shocked by the experience - as was he. It took 20-30 min to receive first drink order and water and two men that sat next to us for only 5 min where helped first which was surprising. I noticed the portions of food were much smaller and prices raised - which is fine - but the crisp was quite fishy. We did not complain though as the food is excellent and I appreciate. However when we were finished with our first drink, it took over 45 min to get a second round - I asked a waitress with dreadlocks 3 times for a second round and she did not deliver- where I had fo ask a another waitress for help - no apologies or mention of comping a drink were mentioned. A round of drinks were taken off our bill which was appreciated however it did not make sense as to why the service was so poor. It was a bit offensive and I’m a bit shocked to be honest as this was my new favorite restaraunt. I only write this because my husband is in the industry with Wolfgang and it’s necessary to know about the change of dynamic after only a few months - it was too drastic of a change for this place in only 2 months and I hope it doesn’t happen again to anyone else because I truly respect this restaraunt and would like to go back one day .
