BarSurMer is a seafood focused lounge with influences mainly from the Basque region, best known for Tapas, Vermouths, Gin Tônicas, Sherries, & Porron wine service.
This small intimate gem located in the Greenwood neighborhood features small plates from a wood-fired oven, and house-crafted cocktails. BarSurMer is the third Restaurant for award winning chef Eric Donnelly, founder of RockCreek Seafood & Spirits and FlintCreek Cattle Company. Come join us monthly for the Sunday Drive where our resident DJ spins an all vinyl set.

    Very good experience overall. Nice tapas style meals in a cool industrial/lofty atmosphere with high tables and chairs and efficient service.

    Took my mother out for dinner and we shared the beef tartare, sardines, and octopus. My mom got the Chardonnay and I, a gin & tonic cocktail. Bill totaled $116 with tax & tips. Overall experience was nice. Decor & ambiance was pleasant. Service was excellent. I would say value for money was lower than expected.

    The food is great, and the cocktails are creative and delicious. We love the waiter there. He is always friendly and takes good care of us.

    Delicious tapas served in a relaxed, informed and unrushed me manner. Highlights were the beef tartare, sweet but smoky mussels and the hongos (mushrooms). Will definitely be back to tackle more!

    We enjoyed Bar Sur Mer. Service , ambience and food/beverages all great. Wish the portions were just a teeny bit bigger for the price.

    It was a lovely place for an early dinner before a play at Taproot Theatre across the street. The service was just right - kind but not too much, more European - with a charming ambiance (before the dinner rush so fairly quiet), and the food was delicious. The prices seemed a little high for the portions on most small plates, but we ordered a couple dishes that seemed enough to share (clams and steak tartare). That said, the prices of the baguette with herb butter, glasses of Txakoli wine, and Basque cheesecake all seemed reasonable for the portion, and they all made us feel like we were in the Basque Country.

    This is a solid restaurant, seemingly dedicated to non-basic seafood dishes. An odd thing about PNW seafood restaurants is they tend to serve the same basic dishes: piece of cod, prawns fried or scampi, lobster tail. No so at Bar Sur Mer... we had several interesting seafood dishes, among other things. In no particular order... Mocktails: 4 different mocktails, each thoughtfully prepared. Standout: The High Seas. If I knew more about cocktails, I would explain which real cocktail this is like, but I don’t. It was tasty and small and didn’t make me feel like an unwelcome guest for not drinking alcohol. =) Jamon Iberico: thinly sliced like prosciutto, drizzled with oil and sprinkled with sea salt. Honestly, this was underwhelming. Iberico can be amazing, but the price and selection in the USA leave restaurants to these kinds of gimmicks. Good Iberico stands entirely on its own, and doesn’t come in paper thin ruffles. Braised Artichoke Salad: endives with artichoke and a creamy vinaigrette sauce with various other flavorful bits. Placing a heavier strong flavored sauce on a sparse salad worked really well. Thoughtful. Kokotxas: a Basque Persillade-style sauce made with cod cheeks. The high point of the meal, I want to make this dish at home. The one criticism I would make is that if you’re going to use traditional salt cod, make sure the salt level drops lower than this, it was a bit (not massively) too salty. Still made for a delicious dish, especially for bread dipping after. Charred Mediterranean Octopus: tender, nice unobtrusive sauce. Not A La Gallega, a bit more non-specific. Solid. Point Judith Squid: more of a salad with white beans and squid bits. Very nice. Go here, eat here, try new things here. Ballard needs many more smart restaurants like this.

    food and service was incredible. If you sit in the corner table, bring sunglasses if you’re there at sunset.
