Located between Union Station and Chinatown in D.C.’s East End, Bar Spero is the latest restaurant from Chef Johnny Spero of Michelin-starred Reverie in Georgetown. Inspired by the spirited, fast-paced energy of the Basque nightlife and dining scene, both local D.C. residents and epicurious travelers can expect Bar Spero to be a central hub for creative cuisine and subtly masterful cocktails in a lively, eye-catching, and eclectic space.

The menu is a seafood-forward spread focused on Mid-Atlantic fare. Highlighting specialties such as imported Spanish turbot and Autumn Olive pork from Shenandoah Valley, the menu is shaped by the careful sourcing of world-class ingredients. In turn, the cocktail program takes cues from the kitchen, with a focus on high-quality spirits that elevate classic recipes. Guests can also choose from a tightly curated list of wine and spirits, as well as regional beers on tap.

Bar Spero is now offering a four-course Prix Fixe menu in the dining room, including three savory courses, including one large format shared dish, and one dessert. Inspired by the spirited, fast-paced energy of the Basque nightlife and dining scene, Bar Spero is a lively seafood bar and grill from acclaimed D.C. chef Johnny Spero. The menu draws inspiration from traditions of open-fire grilling and freshly shucked seafood, paired with an ingredient-driven bar program serving masterful versions of modern classics. Bar Spero offers a pre-fixe menu with daily rotating options.

A fantastic dining experience. The burger and soft shell crab were fantastic. Really exceptional service provided by Elsa and Arthur. Highly reccomend!

Bogdana provided excellent service. She was very knowledgeable and attentive. The food was outstanding and all the staff were very friendly.

Honestly a real disappointment. I’m not sure if we got there on a bad night but it was expensive, the food was fine but totally unexceptional, and the service was really, really, slow. Within the last six months I’ve had better food, with better service, in dc, for a third the price.

Bar Spero was a delightful experience. I felt welcome from the moment I stepped in. My friend ran 10-15 minutes late for our reservation so the staff invited me to sit at the bar and take advantage of their HH while I waited for her. The food was delicious. We shared oysters, the side potato, and the arroz con pollo. Nothing was a disappoint. I’ll definitely be back.

I can only speak to Restaurant Week experience, so there is that. Given this concept was originally conceived with the intent of bringing in business in an otherwise slow time of year, while having the chance to introduce and potentially woo new patrons into falling in love with your (one of quite many) establishments, I find these days, this whole intention has been turned on its head. Once, where Restaurant Week was supposed to be a mutually beneficial experience, it has now become a ploy solely working the restaurants’ advantage. $65 is a steeper Restaurant Week dinner cost, so I’ll admit my expectations were higher. However, when you only offer me a limited amount of La carte menu, and you open your RWeek service menu and tell me my first course options are potato chips with some tiny peppers and jamón, or an omelet, you’ve already lost me. Then, if you’re offering me rice, chicken, or a dry, skinny rib eye as my mains, now you’ve just insulted me, on top of that. While the dessert was the highlight and quite tasty, and my friend and I enjoyed our happy hour oysters, I’d be hard-pressed to give this place another chance given the plethora of other amazing restaurants in the DMV. Spend your $$ elsewhere.

My husband and I came here after reading reviews. We LOVED it. Exceeded expectations, both in food and in service. Ribeye is amazing. Wine pairing is incredible!
