Bar Japonais combines a stylish interior with a dynamic culinary and beverage program. Features include vibrant, Japanese-inspired dishes and a French wine and cocktail menu, embodying the spirit of both cultures. As with acclaimed sister concept Bar Chinois, which highlights Chinese and French influences, our inspiration is to once again blend two exciting, rich and timeless traditions to create a special and distinct offering. Bar Japonais' restaurant core values will revolve around energetic hospitality and intuitive service, ensuring a remarkable guest experience.

Located in Logan Circle, Bar Japonais is a short walk from the Washington Convention Center, Capital One Arena, National Mall and The White House.

I was really excited to try Bar Japonais since Bar Chinois has had so much success. The foodie community has been talking about the opening of this restaurant. The experience ended up subpar and somewhat awkward. From the moment we walked in they told us we only had the table for 2 hours but in the same sentence said "but really take your time." I knew we wouldn't need the table for two hours, so I did not care; however, it was an awkward introduction. By the way - the restaurant never filled it's tables (occupancy remained around 60%). When I looked at the Sake menu, I asked if they had a Sake Somm. The waiter seemed very confused and asked me what I wanted to know. I told him that I was looking for a sake recommendation. He left. He came back and said "we all know stuff." I said, "Okay, great - I like slightly unfiltered junmai or junmai deiginjo sakes." He promptly left again. He came back and said "the man who orders the sake is not here." I said that is fine, and that I would just pick something if he could not find something unfiltered. He came back with a bottle. He did not offer a taste, but to be fair the bottle was very good. We ordered food for the table (didn't tell us things came in 2s)- Cucumbers (they were good pickles); Japanese Fried Chicken (dark meat, not a lot of the honey dressing, so a little dry); two tuna sashimi (very good); Two salmon sashimi (good); Himachi crudo (good); We ordered pork belly skewers (we had a 5 pm seating but they then came back and said they already had run out); They do not have sushi rolls; they serve giant hand rolls - we got tuna and salmon; The tuna was good (minced); salmon was not as good. We ordered one or two of each skewers. The beef is NOT wagyu (unusual for a Japanese restaurant at this price point). Chicken quality was poor. Prawns were decent. Overall the food was fine to good. The service was awkward and not professional. They are brand new, but I am not sure I will give them a second try.

I was disappointed with the menu. Bar Chinois is an awesome restaurant with great food. The food at Bar Japanois felt uninspired. No dish truly stood out.

Came to Bar Japonais for a birthday dinner and was not disappointed. The food was expertly made and delicious, and even surprising in some of the preparation. Staff seemed a little confused on occasion but they just opened so I understand that. At no point did we receive bad service. As for food, the vegetable tempura was just a bit soggy for my tastes, but the fried tofu and tuna tartine were delectable. The menu showed souffle pancakes, but we were told the chef removed it after the first couple days to fix some preparation issues. Disappointing, but understandable. The ginger creme brulee was a great substitute. We will definitely be back.

Love Bar Chinois so was excited to try Bar Japonais when it opened! The food was good and drinks were creative, thematic and well crafted. The service was great and the interior/vibe was really cool. Unfortunately, the food portions were extremely small, given the prices. The salmon skewers were really delicious but you’re paying $10 for two little cubes of salmon. Similarly the tuna sashimi was $22 for like 3 little pieces of tuna. Again, it was really delicious. But the value was not very good. I was happy to try Bar Japonais but I will likely frequent Bar Chinois more as you’re getting a lot more for your money than we did at Bar Japonais.

Welcome to the neighborhood - food was pretty good- despite being 1st night, service was on point. Our server was quick, nice, and super knowledgeable about the menu. This was my hang out spot where it was Estadio - so it’s exciting to see a new and sleek design come into the space.
