Bar Cargo is a Roman pizza bar concept brought to you by Anthony Stefani, the son of notable Chicago restaurateur Phil Stefani. It was on a family trip to Italy that Anthony Stefani first fell in love with Roman-style pizza and where the concept for Bar Cargo came to life. After months of working with local chefs, pizzaiolos, and even a world pizza champion, the dough recipe and 96-hour rise process was perfected. The result is a thicker crust that is both light and airy. Topped with fresh & fun ingredients and baked in the Castelli ovens imported from Italy, the perfect Roman-style pizza is achieved.
Outside of the Roman pizzas, the menu includes a wide variety of bar bites, sandwiches, and salads. The name Bar Cargo is a nod to the shipping containers used throughout the concept’s structure and the many authentic Italian ingredients that are being shipped via cargo containers for their famous Roman-style pizza.

We’ve been going to Phil Stefani’s restaurants for many years. Lino’s, 437 and Tuscany on Taylor were at one time, among our favorites. And although we realized that Bar Cargo was not on the same level, we thought we would try it. Sadly, it was very disappointing. We ordered the prosciutto appetizer with the fried dough. The prosciutto look like it had been sitting out for hours. It was dry, cut too thick and had no flavor. We ordered the meatball appetizer and found it to be very salty. We also ordered the Juliana pizza and found that the prosciutto was the same way on the pizza and the crust was very dry as well. We’ve eaten pizza all over Rome and it was nothing like any Roman pizza we’ve ever tasted. The service was also terrible. When we initially sat down, we waited at least 10 minutes for a server to approach our table. And once we were served our food, our waitress returned to see if we needed anything or to even give us our check. We eventually had to get up and ask the host for our check. Bar Cargo needs to figure out whether it’s an authentic Roman Roman-style pizza bar or simply a place for sub-par bar food because even their menu doesn’t make sense. Needless to say, we won’t be returning.

We have been here several times, once when it opened, once last year, and yesterday. The first two times were very good, and we were excited to go back. The experience last night was unfortunate. Our reservation was at 7:00, we were done with two appetizers and a pizza and out the door by 7:30. We got a chicken caesar salad, the chicken was clearly precooked and refrigerated for who knows how long, it was dry as a rope, and not edible, we put it on a plate to the side, but our server never stopped by to ask how anything was. We also got the fried cheese curds, they were fine but nothing special. We then got two of their new personal pizzas. The flavors were good, but they didn’t come together in the right way, not sure how to describe it, but we both took one bite and our immediate reaction was that we wished we had ordered their normal pizza. The server did ask how the pizza was, and we started to give feedback, she was gone so fast, all she had time to hear was “it’s alright…”, and she was gone, she didn’t care and was only checking a box. I don’t think we will be going back after this experience. I noticed around the time we were leaving that they were pretty empty for a Friday night, which is very telling in Chicago. They must have lost their excitement and motivation for being in the restaurant business.

Couldn’t find our server at most times and it wasn’t busy. The manager helped us a lot when it came to drinks, water and napkins. Pizza was pretty good.

Really great pizza spot! We brought our young kiddos and it was pretty kid friendly, all of the staff were extremely friendly and attentive. The heated patio is amazing! Great happy hour and the best kalamari we’ve ever had. Will definitely be back when it’s warmer outside!

My first night in Chicago and I wanted to try some of that famous Chicago style pizza ! This place was right up the street from the Best Western in River North and have Roman Style pizza . It's delicious ! Come here instead of trying those deep dish tourist trap places . Staff are friendly and drinks were great too ! I tried half Queen and half Fun Guy pizza ( they let you pick half and half different flavors . ) Small pizza was enough for two hungry people with the Calamari and we brought a couple slices back to the hotel . Delicious crust too.

I loved this place. My husband and I enjoyed ice cold beer and fabulous pizza (half pepperoni and half sausage). The environment was fun and upbeat. The neon signs decorating the wall are fun. Can’t wait to go back!
