We chose to celebrate a 50th birthday, expecting a festive and enjoyable time. Unfortunately, the experience was far from what we had hoped. After being seated and enjoying ourselves for about 45 minutes, we were abruptly told that we only had 45 minutes left of the bottomless mimosa option, which was disappointing given that we had just started. To make matters worse, we were cut off from drinks 15 minutes earlier than promised, even though we weren’t causing any issues. Our group, which ordered over $200 worth of appetizers, was respectful and considerate, and no one had complained about us. Despite this, our waitress began whispering about us to her colleagues, which we could clearly see, and they all started staring at us, making us feel unwelcome. The entire atmosphere shifted, and it became clear that we were not wanted there, so we asked for our check and decided to leave the table early. Still hoping to salvage our celebration, we walked over to the bar, only to be ignored by the staff for about 10 minutes. When we finally asked for assistance, the manager, who was an African American woman, approached us. Rather than resolving the situation, she immediately launched into insulting us, making it a point to mention we were “the ones who ordered unlimited mimosas,” and made it clear that she wasn’t going to serve us, although we didn’t drink for the full 90 minutes due to the unwelcoming environment her staff created. It was a disappointing experience, and I’ve never felt so unwelcome in a restaurant. Perhaps they should reconsider offering unlimited mimosas if they only want to cater to a certain clientele. I couldn’t help but think how differently the situation would have been handled if the tables were turned—had I treated the manager the way she treated us, it likely would have become a scene (and I say this as a minority myself). The bottom line is that we spent a significant amount of money, behaved respectfully, and were made unwelcome. Don't recommend!

Food is amazing; great service. Really good place for sharing lots of small plates. The only negative is that it is noisy.

Food was overall very good. Some interesting food combinations. A good place if you are adventurous and open minded.

Food was good, not exceptional. Portion sizes for a $30 pasta was ridiculously low, like 5 small pieces of ravioli. But the main thing was our rude server, may be she wasn't having a good day but don't think I am going to revisit

Dined alone at the bar and ordered way too much food for one person. I have NO REGRETS. Everything I had was at least an 8 out of 10. The short rip hummus was the show-stopper; you must order this or you blew it. Hamachi Crudo was piquant and perfectly balanced. The chorizo-stuffed dates were sharp and vibrant and rich- I only needed one of these and that was a lot. The other knockout was the watermelon and tomato salad. I suspect this will be off the menu soon due to seasonality- get it while you can! I didn’t find any cocktails I loved. Lots of clear liquor like gin and vodka. The vesper was a little too “dry” for my tastes. The date old-fashioned was a one-trick pony that lacked depth and heft. I’ll try more cocktails if I come back with another person, as I believe in the craftsmanship of this place. I sat at the bar and the service was a rotating cast of whomever was available to take my order between making drinks and waiting on a few nearby tables. The fellas were friendly and helpful. No complaints at all about the service. Overall my first experience at Avec was overwhelmingly positive and I plan to return next time I’m in Chicago.

We had a fantastic dinner at Avec to celebrate our wedding anniversary. While not a “romantic” space, the restaurant is bright and airy, which made the acoustics less than perfect, but we were able to have quiet conversation. Our server, Kyle, was OUTSTANDING, and the food was top notch—not fussy, just fresh, flavorful, but not heavy. Will definitely recommend and return.

Food was excellent, service was poor. We waited an hour between the appetizer and the entree, and it would have been longer if we hadn't gotten the waiter's attention and asked when our food was coming. He said he had forgotten to put in the second course. He also was totally blase about the this and our whole dining experience.
