Asador Bastian is a Chicago chophouse with Basque influences from acclaimed Chef
Doug Psaltis. Located in the iconic “Flair House” originally built in 1883, this historic
townhouse has been revived and brought back to life with culinary inspiration from the
great asadors of San Sebastián, Spain to serve the world’s best boutique beef without
compromise. The most remarkable dining experience comes from the purest ingredients
delivered in the supremely thoughtful, welcoming and hospitable manner. This ethos
has directed every aspect of the experience at Asador Bastian, whether you’re joining
us for small bites and libations in our Bar Room or for a more intimate experience in our
Dining Room.

Acclaimed wife-and-husband team Hsing Chen and Doug Psaltis lead the kitchen, which turns out Basque-inspired feasts starring impressive steaks cooked over a live-fire grill alongside caviar churros and arroz cremoso. It’s all served in an opulent dining room decked with olive green leather banquettes and vintage Murano glass chandeliers.

Our Chef's Table is located directly across from our kitchen where you will have a full view of our world class chefs at work creating the dishes that make our restaurant so unique. The Chef's Table is an experience created for 6 or 10 guests. A deposit of $150 per person is required for booking this private dining room. The deposit is applied to the final bill.     Let’s just say my experience at this place was less “fine dining” and more “fine whining.” I eat out often—about 2-3 times a week in Chicago when I’m in town. So when it came time to treat my girlfriend to a nice dinner during restaurant week, I hyped this place up. We had a 9 pm reservation but decided to show up a little early, around 8:30 pm. No big deal, right? Well, they seated us right away at the bar area, which was surprisingly quiet, almost too quiet. The server, Diego, approached us like he had just sprinted a marathon and was about to pass out. I had a few questions about the regular and restaurant week menus, but he answered them with a hurried attitude, practically telling us to hurry up because the kitchen was “closing soon.” Mind you, it was still 8:30 pm, and people were still trickling in at 9. After we ordered, Diego took our menus—and even the wine list—like we’d just signed up for a food scavenger hunt. The beef tartare? Amazing. But from there, things took a nosedive. The restaurant week menu was honestly a disaster. We couldn’t even finish it. We also ordered the tuna from the regular menu, and it was drenched in so much pepper and oil, it felt like I was eating a fishy oil slick. At this point, the service manager came over and noticed the tuna didn’t look quite right. “I want to make this right for you,” he said. Well, buddy, too little, too late. I was already fighting the urge to ask for the wine menu for the third time. It felt like they were trying to prevent us from ordering. The cod? So salty that I thought I’d need a trip to the ER for dehydration. I politely mentioned it to the server, saying I wasn’t asking for a freebie—I just wanted to let them know it was overly salted. His response? “Well, it’s not your palate.” Oh, really? So now my palate’s the problem? Then the cherry on top: both the server and the manager proudly announced that they’d all tried my fish in the back, and it was “perfect.” Wait, hold up. You guys are s

    Extremely pompous attitude by staff. Was told by hostess that room would be full in minutes when I asked not to be seated right next to someone in nearly empty room at 4 PM on Monday. It wasn’t full in minutes. Felt like I was being shamed for only ordering the Restaurant Week special and not supplementing with additional menu offerings-that were pushed very hard. Portions were very small. Dessert was delicious.

    Went for restaurant week. The restaurant week menu was of course limited, but very good. Food is amazing and the service was perfectly attentive and pleasant. The place is really nicely designed and we could have a nice conversation over dinner (not noisy).

    A Culinary Experience Worth Every Penny Asador Bastian is truly a gem in Chicago’s dining scene.     Just a good restaurant. Overpriced for the food you get. Had a 3 course meal, nothing was impressive. Good quality but nothing better than a regular Chicago Steak house for double the price

    From the discreet but austere exterior of this brownstone, to the wonderful, warm and cozy ambiance, the on point, knowledgeable and approachable service to the amazing mouthwatering creations by Chef Doug Psaltis and his team, Asador was nothing short of amazing. The food was so utterly delicious, beautiful, seasoned and on point. The cocktails were excellent, the bone marrow potato puree is a show stopper, and no matter what seafood or steak you choose it will be expertly prepared over a live fire. Do not mush the caviar churros, and the tuna “taco” that was a feature was outstanding. We dined on the Aukaushi Wagyu steak. All steaks are bone in strip loins, grilled to perfection, sliced, finished with salt, and some delicious bright, pickled peppers to accompany it all. And the Citrus Coupe was a crushable dessert of citrus flavors and textures. Well thought out and executed. This should def be a Michelin starred establishment.
