ARTIFACT is a full-service restaurant featuring craft cooking inspired by ancient methods, spices and botanicals located inside the beautiful Mingei Museum at Balboa Park . Offering indoor, outdoor courtyard, and bar seating for lunch Tuesday-Saturday.

Crafted by Tim Kolanko, Executive Chef, Urban Kitchen Group, and Tony Coito, ARTIFACT’s Chef de Cuisine, will be a nod to Mingei’s changing international exhibitions in an environment filled with functional, innovative art and design by Jennifer Luce, Founder and Principal of LUCE et studio, who led the design and renovation project.

    I had one of the best meals I have ever been served today, the Avacado Bowl. The complexity of flavors and textures was outstanding. Our waitress was excellent, very knowledgeable about the menu and very welcoming. I recommend this restaurant for the decerning diner.

    Pre-theater dinner with my wife - they got us in and out in less than an hour without rushing. We shared a really excellent eggplant dip, a main course of slow-cooked pork on a tortilla, and a burned Basque cheesecake, both of which were very good. Dishes are a bit unusual, and it's not easy to figure out from the quirky menu what anything might taste like. Wine & mocktail were both enjoyable. Service was very good. Our only complaint is that long sofa seating, which is too low & too deep. Quiet ambience was much appreciated. Inside seating is in a museum lobby, which is nice & bright, but not a place for an intimate tete-a-tete.

    This is a gem of a restaurant at the Mingei Museum. The menu is a sampling around the world with many items that could be shared. It’s a treasure to check out with a cute cafe and patio option too.

    Lunch at Artifact is always a treat—the food is creative and delicious, and it’s a beautiful place to be whether you’re inside or out. Highly recommend.

    Such a unique restaurant inside the museum. My husband and I went on a Friday night for dinner. The service was outstanding from everyone we encountered at the restaurant, and the food was phenomenal too. Recommend the African chicken, shrimp goyza, fried green beans, and eggplant dip. I had a glass of the Greek red wine which was fun, you don’t see that on the menu too often. Great experience!

    My husband and I are no strangers to tasting menus. Probably the most well known chef we've had a tasting menu from is Josè Andres. With that said, we were disappointed with last night's tasting menu. We found almost the whole experience dissapointing. First, the food. While there was nothing that we hated, there was also nothing special, anything craveable, or surprising, or new. The only word I can think of as far as the food is concerned is "fine". You don't want fine with a tasting menu, you want "great" or "interesting", you definitely want "worth it," which I don't think this is. 1st course was all over the place. The arroz caldo needed salt or patis, something that would punch the flavor up. The oyster came out too salty. I liked it w/ the coconut milk but I wish I mixed it with the arroz caldo to balance the flavors and salt level out. The clam was the best part but it's tiny at just 1pc per person. The fish course was boring. My fish was probably 30 seconds under but that's fine. It tasted OK but it said nothing new, and the plating was uninspired. I like the twist of using yogurt but the yogurt used was grainy and detracted from the dish. The beef course was my favorite but mainly because the beef was so tender. The beef itself needed more flavor, the most flavorful part of the dish was the oil drizzled on the cauliflower. Second point is value. I did not see the value in this 4 course meal. Yes, tasting menus are always tiny but there's more pressure when it's only 4 courses to make the diner think it's worth $95 for 4 TINY courses. There was no razzle dazzle, the plating was so simple and boring that I can do it myself w/ 1 hand tied behind my back. Pretty plates does not mean interesting plating.

    I’ve reviewed the Artifiact theme dinners before and they are always excellent. No need for detail, they are a do not miss dining experience.
