Dating back to the 15th Century, The Anchor Inn is a family-friendly pub in the village of Hartfield, East Sussex – best known as the home of author AA Milne.

For the hungry, our chef combines fine local foods with traditional pub fare, served alongside regional cask ales, spirits and carefully selected wines.

As well as the spacious dining area we have a vibrant front bar and a more cozy back bar alongside the restaurant and function room, which features an inglenook fireplace.

We have guest rooms available for those who want a comfortable and welcoming base for exploring our beautiful countryside.

Whether you’re joining us for a pint, a quiet meal or a family celebration, you’ll always find a warm welcome at The Anchor.

Our large dining area (which includes a private bar) is available to hire and we can make it the perfect venue for a birthday, wedding or any other celebration. We’ll take all the stress out of your special occasion and ensure that all your guests have a fabulous time. We can accommodate up to 40 people for a sit-down meal and can set up the room with space for a dance floor, should you want a disco or band. If you’d like the room decorated in a particular way then please let us know. As well as parties the room can also be hired for other events such as meetings and wakes.

Great traditional pub with good roast dinner. Busy Mother’s Day but service was good.

The seven of us could not fault the food which is of a very high standard. Cooked freshly. The only complaint was a lack of heating on the premises. Only a small open fire at one end of the pub which is inadequate for the size of the premises. It was also a bitter day when we went there.

Despite serving until 3am the previous night the waiting staff were cheerful & attentive - couldnt fault the service. We were booked early & set in a back area which was a little quiet until more guests arrived.

It took nearly 2 hours (there were 2 children in our party) for our food to turn up and when it did they had forgotten the pork chop and sausage and mash. When the missing dishes finally turned up they were inedible. We didn't want to make a fuss as our family hadn't seen each other for a while and didn't want to sully the moment. Also the older lady behind the bar seemed to have a problem with us splitting the bill! On top of this I realised after we had left they had charged us for an extra pork chop. Having been in the same line of business for a while I understand everybody can have a bad day but I can only describe it as complete chaos - it wasn't even busy! Definitely a thumbs down from us.

Lovely country pub always serving tasty and very good food. Staff are very friendly and a cosy ambience. Have visited many times and would always recommend.

Amazing food! So difficult to find good Sunday roast nowadays! Ans quirky dishes that you don't usually get such as rabbit stew and pheasant kiev! Outstanding. The staff is great, polite, smiley, knowledgeable! This is our second time and we will come back again and again!

A good old pub with excellent front of house staff let down by very poor food which was expensive for what we had. The central attraction fire in the main bar was not light on a cold day. Couldn’t recommend this pub now. What a shame.
