For steak lovers seeking an unforgettable dining experience, AJ’s Prime Steakhouse is a must-visit spot. Nestled atop the Ancora Hotel in Punta de Mita, this gem is a celebration of USDA Prime beef perfected on live-fire.

Since its establishment by Amanda & Jared Leonard—renowned for their MICHELIN Guide Denver 2023 recognition with AJ’s Pit Bar-B-Q in Denver—AJ’s Prime embodies a passion for the art of live-fire cooking. The USDA has set the standard for beef quality since 1927, and AJ's takes this commitment seriously, featuring only USDA Prime cuts -representing 2% of all graded beef. Every steak is expertly seasoned and smoked, then slowly cooked to a perfect rare before being seared on an 800-degree wood-fired grill. To finish, we lavish our steaks with house-made compound beef tallow.

Savor every bite as the sun dips below the horizon, casting vibrant shades of orange and pink across the ocean. Dine indoors in the cool comfort of air-conditioning or outside on the terrace.

Menu

In 1927, the USDA established a standard by which American beef would be graded. Prime beef accounts for only 2% of all graded meat. AJ's uses only the best quality USDA Prime beef from the local butcher shop, Rugby Scott. All of our steaks are seasoned and smoked, slowly cooked to a rare temperature, then finished on an 800-degree wood-fired grill. This method, we truly believe, makes the best quality steak. Our steaks are finished with house-made compound beef tallow. A variety of accompaniments are available.

                                          AJ's has a lovely dining room, windy enough when we were there to opt to sit inside. The beef, especially the 250 gram filet, was wonderful. It was well seasoned, perfectly cooked and tender. The sides, were lacking, especially the Brussels, which were flavorful but undercooked, and the mashed potatoes, which were very garlicky, but over processed. It's expensive by Mexico standards, over $100 per person for our group with one bottle of wine and no appetizers or salads. Still, a welcome addition to Punta Mita.

                                          The rooftop restaurant AJ's Prime is excellent. We happened upon it on day by accident and stayed for a drink. The steak smelled so good and the people were so friendly, we returned the next night for dinner. I intended to order a steak but the fish special sounded too good to miss. Grilled snapper on carrot purée with hibiscus coulis and topped with arugula--I cannot describe how wonderful it was! Perfectly cooked with interesting flavors. My husband enjoyed his strip steak, again cooked perfectly to order. We each had a cocktail (he a spicy margarita, I a punch served with bourbon instead of rum). Our waiter was attentive and personable, and we are eager to go back. Next trip to Punta Mita, Prime will be high on our list of reservations.

                                          Amazing new steakhouse in the roof of Ancora in Punta Mita. Best sunset views in town. The menu is small consisting of a few steak cuts and a few seafood items. No fluff. The steaks were seriously good. Apparently they smoke them and then grill them. We had ours sliced table side. Great simple sides and dipping sauces. The service was excellent as was the selection of wine and beer. Overall an amazing meal and evening.

                                          New restaurant. Great view, perhaps the best in Punta de Mita. Service was very attentive. Steaks were quite good and the margueritas were excellent.

                                          Absolutely breathtaking view!! And it goes downhill after that! It is a new restaurant so maybe they are still working out the kinks… I had to send my salmon back because it was cold, and raw in the middle, it came back barely warm and still raw. My husband’s steak that he ordered medium raw was also undercooked. The staff was very friendly and the service was good… we will give another try in a few months!

                                          Es un lugar con una excelente vista para disfrutar de la Puesta de Sol 🌅, la comida esta deliciosa y todo está en su punto, los postres no son de lo mejor, pero están pasables, el carajillo que me tomé no sabía ni a café, ni tampoco a licor 43, el servicio excelente, si regreso
