Abacá is an airy, atelier-style restaurant with a cool outdoor terrace, whipping up Filipino-Californian cuisine with flair in Fisherman's Wharf. It's the bricks-and-mortar spin off of chef Francis Ang's pop-up Pinoy Heritage. The lively menu is split up into barbecue sticks, noodles and rice, and small to big plates, but its far more nuanced than just that. Flavourful dishes pull from family recipes and are glazed with modern and heritage technique to result in a vibrancy that's hard to come by. It's grounded by local produce. Smoked Bay scallops lead in the seafood pancit, heirloom tomatoes top homemade tinapay bread, chicken skin is glazed in an adobe before hitting the grill and guinea fowl comes slathered with peanut sauce. A truncated list of creative Southeast Asian libations bring it full circle – if you're on the terrace, cool off with the Baguio breeze slushy – a dreamy mix of pandan-infused vodka, coconut and strawberry.

    As a Filipino, I was ecstatic to try out their modern take on Filipino flavors. I thought the Abacá team did a great job highlighting both lesser-known or adventurous dishes like Balut 3 ways (delicious! a great entry-level way to try Balut ^_^), while still offering elevated variations of well-known dishes like Lechon and Sisig Fried Rice. We also tried the Torta Cebuano and Kangkong Fritter which were delicious. All the flavors felt balanced and the portions are just right to where you can try multiple dishes and be left feeling super full. For dessert, we had the smoked ube tart which was, as they say, not too sweet! We also got a complimentary cassava cake as we were celebrating a special occasion. A nice way to finish off the meal. Oh! And cocktails were oh so yummy and strong lol. Service and ambience was spectacular. Filipinos are known for their hospitality, and I felt that really shined in an elegant fine dining way here. Our waiter was highly attentive and took extra care to ensure our meal went smoothly. I have a lot of allergies and he provided me with a menu where he marked which items were safe. I wanted to try things off the secret menu, and he went back to the kitchen to double check for me. With each round of food, we never had to wait too long and our waiter made sure to check when we were ready for more food or drinks. My personal favorite part of the service was that the Abacá staff had actually brought me a card that said “Congratulations” on it where they all signed their greetings. So sweet! It’s those little touches that really add to the homey experience. We saw other tables who ordered the Kamayan meal. We’ve done it in the Philippines, but the presentation here was on another level. We decided we definitely have to come back for that with a bigger group! And also to try the chefs tasting menu another time. Thank you Abacá team for a wonderful meal and experience.

    Great place with attentive hosts and servers. The food was amazing. Our table had the tasting menu and we were all blown away by the food. Filipino food elevated! Also, the staff all signed a birthday card for my partner which was a great touch! Will be back!

    The service, presentation, flavors and dessert...all top notch and each dish so unique. This is a restaurant for those who like variety and a start to finish dining experience unlike any other! For a date, special occasion, or end of the day feast...it's on point!

    Everything was wonderful. All the staff were present and attentive during our experience. We got the drink pairing and were very stuffed and tipsy by the end. Excellent food and service. The dishes were so creative!! Fingers crossed for a star soon!

    Amazing collab with Kuya Lord. Highlighting Filipino dishes to the fullest. Abaca has incredible food and great service. One of my fav SF restaurants.

    Abaca is a very special restaurant - authentically, unapologetically Filipino, while highlighting Californian ingredients in the cuisine. The husband / wife team are a delight - wonderful food and excellent service.

    Upscale dishes with Filipino flavors from a constantly updated menu. I've eaten here for brunch, lunch and dinner and I've gotten pastries from their bakery/panaderia. Everything is excellent! For dinner, the sisig rice is a must have. I also recommend ordering any broth or soup on the menu. Whatever it is, especially if it has lobster in it, it will not disappoint. Any salad is great! Any dish served with bread for dipping into any sauce, even if it's breakfast pan de sal -- go for it! Any of the drinks are delicious. My faves are the Alapaap, a mocktail with tamarind and the hot chocolate laced with ube. My fave pastry is the bibingka cake wrapped in banana leaf and topped with a square of brie. If you have a favorite protein or seafood, try any of the Abaca dishes that feature it. You will have something that you haven't had before. I like mussels and last Saturday they had mussels with a coconut sauce. I've never eaten mussels this way and it was heavenly!

    I'm not sure why it took so long to check this place out, but I'm glad that I finally did! To celebrate Filipino American History Month, one of my sisters and I had dinner here after watching the beautiful and moving documentary "Nurse Unseen" in the Marina. After the film, we hiked over to Abaca and started off with some thirst quenching cocktails at the bar. My favorite was definitely the Manila Coke. After an hour at the bar, we were seated at our table. We couldn't decide on which dishes to order, so the waiter kindly recommended the Leave It To Chef Tasting Menu. Holy smokes... The portions were more than enough. I was hella full by the third course. Every dish was delicious and Instagram ready! Don't forget to check out the secret menu... You don't wanna miss out! I will definitely return to Abaca before Christmas with more family. Please support this outstanding Filipino restaurant! Why isn't this place Michelin-starred yet? Wait, does Michelin even matter these days?
