Lake Elmo Inn is opened a new restaurant at Union Depot in Saint Paul. Owners Chef John and Christine Schiltz named 1881. The name “1881” pays homage to the year both the original Union Depot and Lake Elmo Inn opened, reflecting the deep historical connection the restaurant hopes to foster.

Offering a sophisticated yet welcoming atmosphere, 1881 by Lake Elmo Inn will merge the charm of a storied past with a modern culinary flair, becoming a destination for both locals and visitors.

They were a little slow in giving us water. It took a while for the waitress to attend to us. Once she realized her error she was quite attentive. The food was very good. Both of us liked our food. The space was rather noisy—open in the depot,

Duck was a little disappointing. Steak and sunnies were done nicely. Liked the setting and managed the noisiness of the large space

Most importantly, all staff, from the hostesses to the wait staff, were friendly and welcoming. Walking through Union Station was a trip in history. The restaurant sits in a former headhouse of the Union Depot. Our meals were delicious (steak, walleye, and scallops). There are many choices of appetizers and sides as well as beverages, alcoholic and non-alcoholic. We shared a well-sized booth with our friends. As the restaurant sits in the reception area of the headhouse, the ceilings are high and the noise is somewhat loud. All in all, it's worth a trip to 1818.

We liked that we could still get breakfast at 1:30! The food was good and reasonably priced. We definitely had a quiet corner where we could carry on a conversation !! That is so unusual in restaurants these days.

Beautiful setting for a business lunch - will be coming back for HH or dinner to try out their cocktails. Service was excellent and food was good. Larger menu than i expected (so something for everyone. and learned they serve breakfast as well.

Service and food very fine. This is fine dining so be prepared for fine dining prices.

Union Depot is a grand place to visit. The openness of the restaurant lends to ambiance and increased noise levels. Our visit coincided with a large scale Halloween event in the hall. It felt as though our server was inexperienced. A mismatch of effort and execution. Best food ordered was the sunfish and French onion soup. The chicken Parmesan was awkward to eat, crowded in a bowl. A bit disappointed our Open Table reservation note that this was a birthday celebration wasn’t conveyed. The restaurant offer for a complimentary glass of champagne didn’t fit our group or noontime meal. 1881 is worth a second try, with proper planning.

Our server was an incredibly polite and professional individual. She made us feel right at home, and made us feel like there we were the only ones that she was taking care of. She was consistently positive, always had a smile on her face, and was a pleasure to meet. The food was great, but being that it was brunch, I would’ve expected a bit larger portion size. But other than that, it was a very nice experience!

This was our second visit to 1881 by Lake Elmo Inn, both in October. Our first experience was with a group of eight for dinner; the second, lunch with another couple. Both trips were memorable, conjuring memories of train travel and during lunch, prompting a discussion of a future train trip to Chicago. We loved the openness of the restaurant, the ambience provided by the nostalgic St. Paul Train Depot and the friendly, courteous service offered by the wait staff. Food was classic Lake Elmo Inn. We had some excellent appetizers at dinner; and everyone liked their entrees. The daytime menu was varied and satisfying for a leisurely lunch. We did not feel rushed at either meal, which was much appreciated. We thoroughly enjoyed both meals and plan to return when we are back in town. Your restaurant is a welcome addition to the city.
