Lake Elmo Inn is opening a new restaurant at Union Depot in Saint Paul. Owners Chef John and Christine Schiltz and our team will launch 1881 by Lake Elmo Inn on Thursday, August 8th. The name “1881” pays homage to the year both the original Union Depot and Lake Elmo Inn opened, reflecting the deep historical connection the restaurant hopes to foster.

Offering a sophisticated yet welcoming atmosphere, 1881 by Lake Elmo Inn will merge the charm of a storied past with a modern culinary flair, becoming a destination for both locals and visitors.

1881 by Lake Elmo Inn is to be a place where families can build lasting memories. We want to offer an experience that generations can cherish, from proms to graduations to weddings, we’re here to make moments unforgettable.

Was disappointed in the food. Appetizer (reuben truffles) were cold on the inside. Salmon was okay but not that flavorful. First cocktail was also very weak. Service was okay but cocktails came slowly, and we were promised dinner rolls that we never received. One of our party received a second cocktail that she had not yet ordered (but kept anyway).

We enjoyed a lovely dinner at 1881. The ambience of Union Depot is special due to the beauty of the historic building. It was a comfortable temperature and the lighting was perfect. I had the no-meat filet mignon with wild rice and carrots. Although the filet was more like a pot roast in it's consistency, it still tasted delicious. My husband had the salmon and it was good. Serving salmon with pasta noodles seemed very different and they were a bit bland. Our wine was great. We did not try the dessert but were given a small complimentary box of chocolate dipped biscotti which we had the next morning and loved it. Our server was fairly non-communicative. Quite serious and did not explain any specials or what the vegetable of the day was. (we overheard another server telling the table next to us so that helped). Overall, it was a fun evening. One in which we had looked forward to since the opening in September. Thank you for providing St Paul with a classy place to dine.

Good food. Nice place. Decent value. I think they were still ironing out some kinks. I really like the setting in Union Depot. We were a little stressed from finding parking. But the staff made it a nice night out.

We stumbled upon 1881 when we were out for a walk in the area. Just in town for a wedding. Justin took great care of us! The food was outstanding! The setting memorable! Can’t recommend enough!!

Delightful lunch … great food! Enjoyed the mushroom soup and everything healthy salad - it was fabulous! Service is top notch.

We gathered at 1881 by the Lake Elmo Inn to celebrate our 42nd Wedding Anniversary. Our daughter and her boyfriend joined us. We had a wonderful meal which was enhanced by the service by our server, Cory. This is the second meal we had at 1881 and Cory was our server on both occasions. She is excellent - friendly, courteous, efficient, and very engaging. The food on both occasions was scrumptious - tasty, well prepared and beautifully presented. We chose 1881 because we so much enjoyed our first meal last July, and the celebration of our wedding Anniversary was an event never to be forgotten. Thank you!

Very good food. Service was top notch. Building is beautiful. Only critique is that it was a bit pricey but still worth it.

Excellent lunch during St. Paul Art Crawl. Started with fabulous Bloody Mary’s, delish! One of us had the breakfast egg and bacon sandwich with hash browns. Very good and great bread. I had chicken soup and chicken pesto sandwich -super fresh and perfect for the season. Corrine, our waitress was knowledgeable and made awesome suggestions. Got us excited to come back and try dinner and cocktails. Highly recommend!
