Set in a charming and historic house on a ridge overlooking The Rivanna River in Charlottesville, Virginia, 1799 at The Clifton is committed to cooking beautiful, locally sourced food in a warm yet chic atmosphere. I would say this is one of the best meals we have ever had. Coming from Philadelphia and DC, the menu was simple but elegant. The flavors in the food were intriguing and all complimented each other so well. We will definitely be back. I wasn’t a fan of the old fashioned but otherwise every single aspect from the other drinks to the bread to the dessert were all 10/10.

We have been to The Clifton Inn many times in our 25 years in the county. It has always been a wonderful except for this visit. We enjoyed our server, she was well suited for her position. It is hard to mess up wine or cocktails. Our arugula salad was as good as recommender by our server. I had the Halibut, it was excellent but was served skin up. My wife ordered the Steak Au Poivre. She tried cutting her meat with a table knife with out success. She then requested a steak knife. Cutting was no easier; she was able to manage a few bits around the edge of her $39.00 steak. The server asked if she wanted to box for home. She politely said no.This was not my biggest disappointment. We were seated around 5:45, finished our conversation and cocktail about 6:20.Our meal were not served until after 7:00. You have a serious kitchen staff problem.

We did not even stay to order. The restaurant seemed like a forgotten back porch on an old house. No one greeted us. The table was rickety. There was a pervasive weird smell. After a while, we moved to the outside porch, which was at least in the open air, but it was 92° & no fans, no greeting. We left without even seeing the menu. We had driven an hour and 20 minutes to enjoy lunch and we were really looking forward to it after seeing the menu and reviews online. It was massively disappointing, and I can’t remember the last time I left a restaurant..

Food was exceptional. Little too noisy for a romantic dinner. If it wasn’t so hot we would have eaten outside. Charming Inn bartender Chris very good.

What a wonderful dining experience, from the early greeting to convivial conversation with the bar keep. We were also very impressed with the beautiful gardens. Beautiful timing on the staff's part, exquisite food - the Octopus with Fermented Baby Carrots, and Steak au Poivre and chef's special dish for me as I am GF and vegetarian - to the GF birthday cake - truly you love what you do and it is appreciated!
