    The service was incredibly poor. We waited an hour for entrees. When the steak was medium instead of rare, the waitress asked if we wanted it warmed up or cooled down. We begged for drink refills. We left to have dessert elsewhere.

    Live in Newport and wanted to give 1639 a try. Went on a Sat night, had a res but not very busy. Very nice large outdoor area overlooking water but it was a hot, mixed weather day so was glad to sit inside with a window view. Started with a cosmo and margarita and have to say both drinks had an interesting twist that we couldn’t put our fingers on but agreed that they were excellent! Our meal was outstanding. Had the crispy Ipswich Clam app that was fantastic, very unique, great flavors and a really nice size to share. For dinner we had the Wild Stripped Bass and Spicy Cavatelli. Both dishes were excellent, nice presentation and prepared just right. They are somewhat new to the local dining scene but have to say they are off to an excellent start. Look forward to returning soon. Hope they come up with cocktail menu that showcases some unique offerings that has become standard in many restaurants. If you are looking for a more casual atmosphere and simpler menu options you’ll want to check out the Torpedo Bar & Lounge. Great gathering spots for before or after dinner too.

    Best dinner in Newport! Incredible ambiance too. The surf and turf special was amazing.

    Horrible service and mediocre food. Wife had chicken, dried out and not hot, I had pasta which was fine just bland. Food quality and service were unacceptable for the price.

    We had a 7:15 reservation. We had several drinks and we split an appetizer. By 10:15, when we still had not received our dinners after asking several times, we left without having dinner and the manager took care of the bill. Not a good experience!

    I think most of the hotel occupants tend to choose the lowest priced restaurant options over this place because it’s far less attended than the others. I certainly wouldn’t spend $65 on a 6 oz filet or $85 on a ribeye. I prefer chicken which was more reasonable and was perfectly cooked, juicy and flavorful. My husband had the spicy pasta and it was delicious. My husband also loved the lemon tart for dessert. The server was friendly and efficient

    The restaurant should have done a soft open to work through all of the kinks. We were there 2 weeks after opening and still a lot of delays, hiccups, unwillingness by the staff to make even minor modifications to the menu. The location is beautiful and once they get their act together I'm sure it will be a nice place.

    Second worst Newport dining experience in 10 years on the Island. Untrained wait staff and the kitchen screwed up the meals to boot. $200+ for 2 people with no alcohol. Avoid 1639 with haste.

    Gene, the restaurant manager is such a pleasure and the ultimate professional. My family and I enjoyed talking with him. He ensured our experience was exceptional. 1639 is fortunate to have such a fantastic hospitality professional! The restaurant is beautiful and the food is wonderful. The wait staff is lovely. Absolutely consider booking a dining experience here!!

    We arrived to a beautiful setting, for a birthday dinner for a party of six. Our waiter was attentive, and we were excited for a great meal, especially since the restaurant had just opened for the new season. Unfortunately, the experience went downhill from there. There were no drink menus available, so we ordered familiar drinks while waiting for them to arrive – which took a very long time. The appetizers were delicious, but our hopes were dashed when we learned the restaurant had very limited gluten-free options: only roasted cauliflower and chicken. Three of us opted for the roasted cauliflower, enticed by the description on the menu. However, when it arrived, a very long time after ordering, it was a major letdown. The cauliflower wasn't roasted at all, but rather resembled boiled brains on a plate with minimal flavor. It was inedible. The other entrees were also underwhelming. We expressed our disappointment to the waiter, who relayed our concerns to the manager. Disappointingly, the manager never came to our table. They did comp the inedible cauliflower dishes, but by then, we were all quite hungry after picking at our mostly untouched meals. We were offered the chicken entree as a replacement, but the wait time would have been significant. Overall, this was a very disappointing experience, especially considering the high cost of the meal. The manager's response of comping only a VERY small portion of the bill did little to salvage the evening. Unfortunately, we will not be returning.
