Situé au cœur du typique Chinatown de Toronto, le R&D est un restaurant urbain décontracté, dirigé par le premier gagnant de MasterChef Canada, Eric Chong et son mentor, Alvin Leung, propriétaire d'un restaurant étoilé au Guide Michelin. L'élégant intérieur du R&D reflète sa double nature : ouvert et animé, à l'atmosphère intime.

Au R&D, les plats orientaux sont alliés au style occidental, sous la forme de plats chinois modernes à partager, où les ingrédients classiques sont traités d'une façon avant-gardiste. Le menu éclectique dispose de plats composés de bouchées, comme le Fun Guo de Grand-Père et le CSB (char siu bao). Dégustez également des plats à partager comme le Meilleur Canard de la Ville et le Poulet Frit aux Cronuts Glacés. Enfin, une sélection novatrice de cocktails accompagnera les mets ludiques et audacieux.

To start, The staff here is really kind and warm and very accommodating. We were late because of the snowstorm and they totally understood and still let us dine. That being said, Sadly the food did not live up to the expectations. The food in winterlicious menu was really disappointing. To start we had soup dumplings and kale salad. Dumplings were basically simple dumplings and had no soup in it. The salad had nothing standing out about it, with very less crunch in it. Second we had duck pad thai and chicken adobo. I am not sure why they would pair dry fried chicken with plain rice. It does not make sense. The overall dish was super dry and very salty. To end, we had panna cotta and fried mantou. Panna cotta was really sour/tangy and fried mantou had again nothing interesting about it. Overall the whole food experience was lower than any other simple asian restaurant selling fried rice. There are so many good restaurants on Spadina, that this one ranks really low for me. Would not recommend to anyone I know.

Was disappointed with the food we got on the winterlicious menu. Everything was bland but the 5 cheese rangoon was good. The two plating of the tagliatelle was weird, one plate had a lot of sauce but the other had none… we were looking forward to that dish the most. Service was okay, he had a bit of an attitude and gave off an uncomfortable vibe. I’m sure the regular menu is very good but I won’t come back to try it.

Great vibe. We sat at the counter and were able to see all the action of the chefs. We went for Winterlicious and very much enjoyed our meal. When we go back we will definitely order the Peking Duck. The saw 3-4 ducks being prepared for serving when the guests arrived - it looked perfect!

Dined at R&D for the Winterlicious menu. The food was frankly just uninspiring “Asian fusion” food and left me feeling disappointed. Our server was unable to explain what was in the sauce for the Crab Rangoon. Plating was also quite mediocre. Seating was quite low and uncomfortable, with the seat cushions on the banquette being really droopy and spaced awkwardly. Was quite disappointed given that the restaurant is on the Michelin Bib Gourmand list. Will not be visiting again.

I was really looking forward to this restaurant, but the main dish was way too salty, so we couldn’t fully enjoy our meal. The appetizers and dessert were good, but both of us had to finish a whole bottle of water because of how salty the main was. The person I was with couldn’t even eat half of it, yet the waiter didn’t bother to ask why. I’ve visited about four restaurants for Winterlicious this time, and this was the most disappointing one.

We did the winterlicious menu. It was excellent. Server was quick to offer us alternatives for two dishes which either too spicy for our taste or not what we expected.
