The Belgian Monk opened in December 2000. The main objective was to create something different yet to fit in with the way drinking and dining is changing. It has become a successful and established bar and restaurant, offering customers a choice of a regular selection of some 45 beers together with a selection of special beers. The menu is based on serving only the best products available freshly prepared daily, at realistic prices, in an informal relaxed "friends and family" atmosphere. The food was amazing but we felt really pressured to leave the table as we decided against a dessert and then we were presented with the bill when we had not requested it and that made us feel they wanted us to vacate. It was not a relaxing lunch!

We were quietly celebrating a good friend’s birthday and drove from Colchester to eat at this beautiful restaurant. The interior is magical with its hanging lights and cavernous dining hall. The food is 100% vegetarian and vegan and so, as vegetarians, we could choose anything from the menu in comfort. One of our diners has a gluten intolerance and the waiter advised us, knowledgeably, about the appropriateness of each item ordered. The food was wonderful! We shared a mixed starter and all commented on the quality. The main dishes were fresh; the dosa was crispy as it should be. The staff were attentive, but not too attentive, and very helpful. Nothing was too much trouble. We all talked about what a lovely experience the evening had been on the drive home.
