In the Royal Lancaster Hotel, the Nipa Thai restaurant has been named after the original Nipa Restaurant in the Landmark Hotel in Bangkok. Lots of teak panelling, traditional Thai furnishings and artefacts lend an authentic air. All the staff dressed in traditional Thai costume are from Thailand - even the lady chefs. This authentic Thai restaurant is one of the first 15 recipients of the 'Thai Select' award - this award has been described as being the first ever Michelin-style award for Thai restaurants proven to be performing to the highest standards of quality and cuisine, and is awarded by the Thai Government. We think this award sums up Nipa Thai rather nicely. What's cooking? Kai Haw Bai Toey - deep fried marinated chicken in pandanus leaves, Kaeng Kiew Warn Kai - chicken in green curry soup, also recommended the Nipa platter - a selection of the chef's special Thai starters.

I’ve been here a few times before and ranked this as the best Thai restaurant in London but last night it disappointed. My Tom yum goong soup was not as spicy or tasty as usual. Normally this is an intense dish but it was just - ok. Then my pork with basil stir fry was a bit chewy. I usually have the chicken so not sure if it is like that always. Also it wasn’t as flavoursome as I normally get. My partner thought that the crab and the pad Thai also needed more spice and asked for some chilli sauce to add. Not sure if it was a chefs bad day or if they have downgraded the spice levels for the tourists but overall I was disappointed. Perhaps I will try one more time to see if this was a one off bad day but it wasn’t as good as it has been.

If I could sum up Nipa Thai in a few words: refined, but relaxed. The food was excellent; the service was excellent. Unable to fault it. They even brought me a small complimentary dessert, with a candle, and sang Happy Birthday! Nipa Thai has been around for decades, because a) it's consistently excellent, and b) it seems the same people who own the restaurant also own the beautiful Royal Lancaster Hotel on whose first floor the restaurant is situated.

What can I say about Nipa Thai that is not superlative? The answer is nothing. It is simply superb. The spring rolls were as always crispy but also with a taste that makes your hair stand on end, it is just so perfect. And as for the soft-shell crab, well world beating is the best description. But it is the wonderful smiling and attentive staff which really made the evening with the best Maitre D'Hotel in London and a wonderful head waitress. As always, the dinner that made my week.
