We tried this restaurant after enjoying their hot chocolate at Bryant Park, hoping it would be a great spot for our sweet-toothed daughter’s birthday. While the food was decent, the desserts were disappointing. Our daughter ordered the “kids chocolate pancakes with lots of chocolate,” (pic) but it barely had any—just a drizzle of white chocolate. After asking for more, it still didn’t live up to expectations. The waffle cheesesteak was good, and the mac & cheese was flavorful, but the desserts fell short. The chocolate heart cake was an average lava cake, and the sundae arrived melted into a slushy mix. The atmosphere wasn’t what we expected—more Cracker Barrel than Willy Wonka. While it’s a fun novelty, we don’t plan on returning. For us, the desserts didn’t deliver.

The experience was great but it is crucial that servers do not forget to place water and utensils on the table at their first interaction with guests. My boyfriend and I waited for 25 minutes until we got water and it was because we asked for it. Overall it was excellent and the wait time was less than expected.

This resturant is only good for dessert and even that kind of stunk. We waited for our reservation, came a little early, they would not seat us till our reservation time. No problem, there is no where to really wait so we waited by the full overflowing garbage. When we sat, the table was dirty, got water the glasses were filthy, ordered a beer, gave me a glass that was also dirty. Ordered regular food, was ehh, ordered dessert was ok, not even good, our waitor was nice and fine and accommodating, bit all in all you should waist your money somewhere else. Unless you get hot chocolate to go.

Love the food and ambiance but the wait time was horrific even though I made a reservation 1 week in advance.

Great place for hot chocolate. The food is not good. Sub par…. Not worth the price. The service man it’s not that great. The place is packed so you won’t be getting checked on and food takes forever. Don’t bother coming over the weekend. Stop by the bar for hot chocolate and be on your way.

This is the second time I’ve been to max brenner and it is exactly as I remember. Friendly staff, quick service, incredible chocolate items, and all around good vibe. Recommended for chocolate lovers.

Our server Christine was fabulous! She was authentic and top of her game. The restaurant was beautiful, open, yet felt cozy, with the most comfortable leather chairs. Clearly, someone has attention to detail because I wanted to buy the chairs for my home. The restaurant had a commodity trading board or a train station type sign behind the bar that changed to different fun quotes, mostly about food. All of the quotes were great conversation continuers. I liked the one lamp in the middle of the bar with a purple lamp shade. The lighting, cheetah painting on the brick wall, and mirror were picture worthy. Grain & Cane served complimentary and delicious and dense banana nut bread. We ordered disco fries to share with the table. The fries, cheese curd, and gravy (on the bottom) were outstanding! We could have licked the plate! Three of us ordered eggs benedict. I added lobster to mine. The additional spinach was yummy; we usually find that on eggs - florentine. The salad was fresh. If I had room to eat it all, I would have asked for extra dressing on the side. I don't recall there being much dressing at all. The radishes were cut round and thinly, which made the salad look colorful. My hubby ordered the burger, which had too much pepper and was cooked medium rare and not medium. He didn't tell the server. I wondered why he was eating more of my meal? LOL. All four of us shared the chocolate cake. Ooo la la, it was delicious and decadent! We also shared a scoop each of lemon sorbet, chocolate fudge ice cream, and vanilla ice cream. The lemon sorbet with the chocolate cake paired wonderfully, as well as the chocolate fudge ice cream and lemon sorbet. I love that combination. My friend and hubby ordered an apple cider and lemonade drink with a dried blood orange and cinnamon garnish. They loved every sip! Our other friend ordered a pretty martini cocktail. She liked that, too. Our server Christine gladly took photos of us, too.
