The restaurant is outside dining, in an enclosed limited access courtyard, of the Riverside Mission Inn. The setting and ambience are beautiful, and the wait service is outstanding as with a Michelin 5 Star but without the pomp and ceremony. The food is above average American Mexican, but not "world class" genuine Mexican. Only refried pinto or mashed black beans are available, and the rice is "red", not the white rice served in many restaurants in Baja California and elsewhere in Mexico. The spicing is mild, typical USA "gringo" style, although a more typical Mexico salsa is available by request. The food is much better than "fast food" or "chain" USA Mexican. One thing to note: make a reservation. When we arrived at approximately 6 PM, there were ample open tables. At no time during our dining was the restaurant full, always with open tables. A party of two arrived the same time as we did, but without a reservation. They were told to return at 8:30 PM for a table. Given that the restaurant was at about half full in terms of empty tables the whole time we were there, the policy must be that without a reservation, one is instructed to wait for at least an hour (over two hours in the case we observed).

There was no wait to get seated when arrived. Unfortunately the service was really bad. Elsa our server would walk by and never check if we needed anything. Drinks were continuously empty. Asked for the check and then server didn’t come back for 20 minutes until we were getting up to leave and go see if the hostess up front could help us pay the bill. Asked to speak with manager and waited for 5 minutes and manager never showed up. Atmosphere is great otherwise.

Food was okay. I ordered the fajitas and it was missing flavor along with the 2 sides it came with. Liked that the restaurant offered chips and salsa on the house. Server was attentive and nice; she always walked up with a smile and had a nice tone of voice. Really liked the ambiance with all the lighting and seating located outside. Added all together with the food, ambiance and cost I probably would not return for another date or any other occasion because of the food.

HORRIBLE… the server was obviously nice at first, but when we were ready and tried to put a drink order in it took about 20 minutes for her to come back to take the order. The thing was she was around us and still helping others out instead of us. So we had to waive down another server and ask for help in which took even another 10 minutes. Once she came finally to take the drink order ,it took ages to come out and even for a bottled beer it should have been quick. After that We still needed a lil time on our order, but the server wasn’t even giving us recommendations or elaborating on the menu choices. Once we finally got our food an hour later there was a hair in it !!! The thing is I came to celebrate my birthday! Like what the heck?! I came here based off reviews and ambience, and it wasn’t what we expected. I finally got the attention of the server to deal with the hair and she came back slamming our plates. I don’t recommend this place, but other than that the food was very basic. Something my mother can make back at home, the cilantro rice was very bland and so was the re fried beans… please done waste ur time and money on a $100+ bill.

Excellent service from beginning to end, and we highly recommend the table side guacamole. We also had the featured ribeye and finished with the flan. Everything worked out and we’ll definitely go back when we’re in Riverside.
