Wharf St. Distillery is a two-level distillery and casual dining venue. We serve fresh, seasonal and modern classics for lunch and dinner. Open from midday to late seven days a week, you can also come along for dink in our bar or try one of our gin-tasting paddles. Foghorn Brewery was born of a dream to make craft beer the way it ought to be made—from grain to glass all under one roof.The historic building in King Street had been abandoned for several years when we first set foot inside. In that dusty old warehouse, we saw the potential to create something really special.And so it was that Newcastle’s first modern craft brewery opened its doors in April 2015. The town’s industrial roots have played a big part in shaping the unique character of Foghorn Brewery. Built from the ground up, this art deco era warehouse with exposed roof trusses now houses a custom 1800 litre brewery.

You’ll need to be in on a few secrets to visit Coal & Cedar. This hidden speakeasy has no signage and no doorbell. Instead, you’ll need to text a special code to a number on the wall and a host will open the door and usher you inside. Rest assured, it’s worth the effort, having just won Best Regional bar in Australia 2016.Once inside, you’ll discover a moody, eclectic cocktail bar with an urban edge. Exposed brick walls and dark timber are complemented by dim lighting from vintage chandeliers. Holding fewer than 60 guests, it’s this old world ambience that sets Coal & Cedar apart from Newcastle’s bar scene.Ethan and Ryan are the team behind the venture. In 2014, they packed their bags and moved from Sydney to the state’s largest regional city to work on their new dream bar. They found the perfect site on Hunter Street, which was just dingy enough to house a Prohibition-style speakeasy. Transforming the space with taxidermy, eccentric images and many a bottle of booze.

We really enjoyed our time at the distillery. The food was excellent and the house gin was some of the best we have had. We thought the Wharf St Navy strength gin was beautiful. I would also recommend the gin tasting platter. We will definitely be back next time we are in Forster.

The restaurant was busy and with only 3 staff to serve everyone it eas slow in receiving drinks and the food. A extra staff member would have taken the pressure off the very busy staff. We will return again for sure.

Last minute booking, and very appreciative for that. Dinner before a show at Civic Theatre, which was a short walk. All staff amazing food was good.
