Spike Afrique... « Le Président de l’océan Pacifique » était le dernier des capitaines de bateau goélette grand-voile sur la côte ouest. Il a appris à naviguer lors d’une expédition sur le « K.V. Kruse », une goélette de cinq mats qui transportait le bois de Seattle à l’Alaska. Spike est surtout connu pour son voyage aventureux avec l’acteur Sterling Hayden et leurs familles qui s’est achevé à Tahiti en 1958 et a été relaté dans le roman de mer classique de Hayden intitulé « The Wanderer ». Spike a combattu dans la bataille sanglante de l’île de Peleliu en tant que Lieutenant « Seabee » pendant la deuxième guerre mondiale, tel que représenté dans la mini-série HBO « Pacifique ». Étant acteur novice à temps partiel, Spike apparait dans le film « Cendrillon Liberty ». Il était une légende connue comme un marin fougueux « de dernière race » dans pratiquement chaque port de la côte ouest. Tout le personnel se fait une joie de vous accueillir pour vous faire profiter d’un bon repas et porter un toast en l’honneur de Spike.
