En 1912, au détour de l'avenue Forest, le jeune Joe Jahraus de 23 ans ouvrait le Laguna Lumber Company et, en collaboration avec son père, un fabricant de cigares, ancien maître postier et agent immobilier, ils construisirent le magnifique bâtiment d'architecture normande qui est ici aujourd'hui. Avant l'ouverture de la scierie (lumberyard), les matériaux de construction nécessaires devaient être transportés à dos de mule ou arriver en flottant sur les marées, ce qui expliquait le peu de résidences permanentes—moins de 300—à Laguna Beach. Après l'ouverture de Lumberyard, la région s'est mise à croître à un rythme sans précédent, la transformant d'une ville de tentes à une ville en plein essor. Laguna Lumber a opéré pendant 63 ans, dont 62 à cet endroit, et son architecture, influencée par la tournée de Joe à l'étranger pendant la Première Guerre mondiale, est une des influences les plus importantes sur l'esthétique de la ville. Des maisons à colombage, des murs de boue et des toits de bardeaux ornent la plupart des devantures de magasins du centre-ville et des maisons dans toute la ville, à cause de cet évènement.
