We both really enjoyed our dinners here. The menu was varied, the server was helpful, and the food was excellent, both in taste and presentation. We will definitely be back when we are back in York in a few months.

I would like to enquire about your service charge and is it both applied to food and drink ? We weren’t aware of the pub now adding a service charge. We believe there was a 20% service charge added to our bill, I would like you to look at our bill and give a response back. The food and drinks we ordered totalled around £118 and we paid £140.34 in total. This is a 20% service charge. Is this right ? I would appreciate a reply on this matter. Kind regards Gaynor Rea

Amazing food and service and the staff couldn't be more pleasant and helpful. We had a fantastic evening celebrating a friends 50th birthday. And a fantastic location in York. Thank you.

This is a beautiful restaurant- very old, great history, wonderful ambience. Unfortunately the food didn’t match. I’m gluten intolerant and dairy free. I have travelled around the UK for a month and have had an overall wonderful experience with restaurants that really try to make nice food that meets my requirements. This was the first place that I felt really didn’t care about my dining experience. There was very little available for gluten intolerance. I ordered a breast of chicken. I knew that the sauces that they made were not gluten free. I thought it would be ok. The meal was supposed to come with a fried tomato and mushrooms, chips and onion ring. Obviously I couldn’t have the onion ring so I asked for one of their sides - called cooked greens. I thought that the kitchen could at least make the effort to include the cooked mushrooms and tomato (even if they had to do up a few mushrooms in oil rather than butter). When I got my meal it was just a very dry chicken breast, chips and very dry green beans. I couldn’t actually get it down my throat without taking gulps of water. A server came and asked how our meals were. She was very kind when I explained I couldn’t really eat it and she went to the kitchen to get them to make me some gluten free gravy. It was very nice of her and I appreciated it - but why couldn’t the kitchen/chef think of it before it was brought to the table? I have been so pleasantly surprised at all the other places I have eaten - but this was a disappointment- I felt like I really didn’t matter. Having said that - I can’t fault the servers - they really tried to help me. In this case the chef/kitchen let me down.
