We checked the hours and saw the restaurant closed at 9:30 p.m. Our reservation was at 7:15 p.m., and we left around 9:05 p.m., feeling that our waitress was pushing us to leave. Although the restaurant wasn’t busy, she checked in on us far too often, interrupting our low-volume conversation and bringing the bill eagerly. When I asked if there was a rush, she said no, but it didn’t feel that way. It made it difficult to relax and enjoy our time.

I have to say both my husband and I were unimpressed with Foreign and Domestic, especially since we’ve had it on our list for a while. It would have been nice to have a standard fish dish, sea bass or salmon maybe, the only option was the Market fish, swordfish. The mushroom pierogi and fingerling potatoes were good but both were overly salty. The Gruyère popovers were overrated - I expected there to be cheese in the popover, but it was just grated on top. Not much flavor. My husband’s hamburger tasted good but was small. I order the steak medium rare, which arrived very rare. I hate being “that person” but I did send it back. Not the best cut so a bit chewy, but the flavor was nice and the Shiseido peppers were a nice addition. Lots of sparkling wine options but only two reds on the wine list (I’m not counting the Beaujolais). Overall, it seemed like a lot of the dishes were using less expensive ingredients (goat neck, pork collar) and charging premium prices. After discussing, we won’t be going back.

This place is a gem! I don’t live in Austin anymore but when I’m back I never miss this place. Get a reservation at the counter and watch an amazing professional kitchen in operation.

Great dinner at F&D. We particularly LOVED the wild mushroom service! Kitchen was a little slow but it wasn't a problem for us, we enjoyed the food, the company, the evening in total. Thanks!

I couldn’t say enough positive things about our dining experience. The staff were super friendly and attentive, the food was incredible (get the cinnamon roll), and the restaurant was adorable!

Excellent meal in a cozy space. Our server was polite and professional and the food was delicious. We particularly liked the gnocchi and the duck fat potatoes we have. We’ll be back to try the popovers and the pasta with goat meat, both of which went by us and looked fantastic.

This is my second experience at Foreign and Domestic. This time for an anniversary dinner with my husband. The night we were there, the restaurant drew a young, hip crowd. The service was earnest and attentive. The vibe is lively, but not so noisy that you cannot hear a conversation with your dining partners. The food is on the heavy side though and a bit uneven. Our pate appetizer had nice texture and contrast with the cherries which were unfortunately overly sweet. The burger tasted like it was infused with additional butter and the fries from old frying oil. We did not finish the fries. The market fish was on the lighter side, grilled on a bed of summer beans with a broth but lacked any personality, relying more on the mild flavor of the fish itself. The summer squash side dish had a nice balance of grilled and chilled squash against a hummus like side. The ice cream, fig leaf for one scoop and rosemary (?) for the other, were tasty. The restaurant has poor ventilation. Expect to leave with your clothes smelling of old fry oil and other kitchen smells. F&D gets such high ratings, but I don't see it living up to the accolades.

Fantastic Sunday brunch experience with lot of great choices featured. You can't go wrong with any of the options at F & D.
