Experience the beauty of the Pacific Ocean at The Fish Hopper Seafood and Steak, overlooking Kailua Bay on the Big Island Hawaii. Enjoy fresh seafood from Hawaii and fresh seafood flown in weekly from California, plus our signature Bucket of Fire and Volcano flaming drinks, all within walking distance to shops and historic sites.

A landmark (formerly the Ocean View Inn) and a local’s favorite Kona restaurant since 1934, the building housing The Fish Hopper has been beautifully restored to expand upon its spectacular ocean views. We proudly serve seafood from sustainable sources, harvested by methods that do not harm the environment.

Driveway to parking is on the RIGHT side of the building when you look at it from the ocean. OR, it's to the right of the main entrance and coffee shop. Parking is available up the driveway, it's lighted for ease in the dark. There are also handicap spots where there is ramp access to the back of the dining room.

Not the first time in the Fish Hopper, maybe the last. Got a 8:30 pm reservation, called to confirm we will not be affected by the kitchen closing at 9 pm. Food was served promptly. At 9:24 pm we asked for hot tea and the waiter offered tea bags to go, was quite rude and visibly upset that we called him out that tea has nothing to do with the kitchen. Did not order desserts. I can see why the rating went significantly down since we visited first time a few years ago. Will consider other restaurants around next time.

Upon ordering we clarified the amount of portion of the Ono fish. The response after checking out the price at 39.99 for 6 oz of a native fish to the island was the snarky reply “Your in Downtown Hawai’i. At the Kona fish market it’s priced at $30.00 per pound. Everyone understands COGS . The fish was $11.22 keeping in mind using a retail market not “Wholesale”. The chef crushed each dish ordered but that reply started the dinning off to a rocky start.

Lovely view raised up above street level and looking over the road to the ocean and sunset. Open air dining with steak and seafood fare including daily specials. Service was good, food was tasty, and they have a gluten free menu available. The cocktail I had was overly sweet and almost undrinkable. Stick with wine and beer. Private parking available in back of restaurant.

I had the fish and chips and they are amazing. Fries were crisp and hot and the fish is ono instead of the typical cod and it’s moist and flavorful. The batter is not greasy with just the right amount of mild crunch. So good . . .

Fish and shrimp was nicely prepared and presented, but overpriced for the quantity. Cocktail was mostly ice for a typically chilled/stirred drink. Fries came out of the kitchen cold and the service was hit and miss from our assigned wait staff.

We are familiar with this restaurant from dining here in the past but mostly from knowing of its sister restaurant in Monterey, CA, only a couple of hours from where we live. I was impressed with the interior decor here. The woods and lighting were lovely in the evening. Our server came to the table promptly to get our drink orders while we perused the menu. My companion started with a bowl of clam chowder that he said was excellent. We both had fish entrees, I the mahi mahi in a delicious sauce and he the ono in a gingery, lemongrass sauce. Unfortunately, he thought his fish was somewhat overcooked but my mahi was perfect. One of the best things was the colorful serving of vegetables done al dente accompanying. They were kind enough to comp a piece of bread pudding, flavored with some nice spices, for a birthday treat. We don’t have enough time to revisit again on this trip but will be back our next visit to the island. Mahalo!
