The Bateman Arms was built c.1750 by Sir James Bateman (Lord Mayor Of London) as a building where his Estate workers would collect on pay day. Over the years it became a staging post for weary Drovers to refresh themselves as they walked livestock from West Wales to markets in Birmingham and London.Today, Mike Pope and his team provide a warm welcome to both locals and the many business and leisure visitors who travel to the Marches throughout the year. Serving a rustic menu packed with pub classics and other items such as freshly baked pizzas, we have something for everyone to enjoy. With the rural splendour of Herefordshire, Shropshire, and Mid Wales on the doorstep, there's plenty to discover!
La Madeleine has been run by a family team since October 2016.Ed Pitts one of the owners and Head Chef was delighted to take on such an amazing venue; “Ever since I’ve been cooking I’ve dreamed about running my own place, so to get that opportunity with La Madeleine is everything I could have wanted; we put the emphasis firmly on great food and drink, served by friendly passionate staff” French cuisine is the starting point for the menu, whether breakfast, lunch or supper but it is a fluid style and borrows influences from many other parts of the world to create a vibrant modern menu. Summer is when La Madeleine really comes into its own as the garden is an oasis, where you can forget that you are in the heart of the city; Whether that’s in the daytime with breakfast, lunch or with a slice of delicious homemade cake; or by taking advantage of the warm summer nights and dining al fresco by candlelight.
