Hilton Head Island's destination for beef & seafood lovers, Crane's Tavern & Steakhouse serves only the finest USDA Prime Grade Beef & fresh local seafood. An old English bar & heart of pine floors create the setting with warm, inviting service & an award-winning wine list.
The restaurant represents 4 generations & over 100 years of restaurateurs in the Crane family dating back to 1908, when an Irish immigrant, Frank Crane founded Crane's Tavern in Philadelphia. After prohibition Frank's son, Francis & his brothers opened the famed establishment at 333 Queen Lane, where his son, Hank worked until 1969. That year Hank ventured out on his own & opened a Crane's Tavern in Ambler, PA. & then purchased the Surf City Hotel on Long Beach Island, NJ creating yet another establishment with the Crane namesake. In 1999 he & his daughter, Beth Anne opened Crane's Tavern & Steakhouse on Hilton Head Island, SC where it has become a local favorite

I made reservations for 5pm because I have a seafood/fish allergy and hope to eat dinner and leave before I am exposed to the smell of seafood because this can trigger an allergic reaction. We arrived at 4 :46pm. When I opened the door, I was greeted by the hostess who told me that the restaurant does not open until 5. It was not the best way of addressing us and did not make us feel welcome. We at outside waiting for them to open. I did not want to open the door again even though it was after 5 because I did not want to incur and more unpleasantries. When the hostess sat us I explained that I had an allergy and asked it there was outdoor seating - No. I told her that if we could be seated in a place away from others because the smell was enough to create a reaction. Her response was that they were a steakhouse, and their fish did not smell. As guests entered they were all placed around us. I guess it was too much to consider putting us in a place that had no one in the area to give us time to eat and get out. Half the menu was seafood and I think all the specials had seafood. I ate as fast as I could to hopefully finish before others were served their seafood. No such luck, I had to use the napkin over my nose and leave before any negative affect. Not the best way to celebrate your wedding anniversary. It is embarassing to have to do this and I will never eat there again.

The place has an old club feel to it. Small but well placed tables. Our waitress was very nice and efficient We ordered the french onion soup since I had read it was good. It was ok. Their fresh warm bread was delicious with a wonderful crust. We ordered the largest prime rib cut to share with creamed spinach and french fries. I wish they had a baked potato but they didn't and the creamed spinach had cheese on top. The Prime Rib was excellent though and the horseradish cream done well. None of the desserts grabbed us so overall it was good but not a great steakhouse.

We always visit Crane’s and are never disappointed in the food. It can get a bit noisy.

We had the shrimp cocktail, French onion soup, mixed greens salads, filet mignon with scalloped potatoes, and liver and onions with mashed potatoes. Veggie was green beans. It was phenomenal!! So worth the price. The decor made it feel like a very old building, but it had only been built in the 1990s. The service was impeccable. Highly recommend!
