Located in the revitalized East Village and housed in the historical Simmons Building along the Bow River, charbar is spearheaded by executive chef Jessica Pelland with the support of co-owners and chefs Connie DeSousa and John Jackson. This locally-relevant and globally-inspired restaurant partners with Sidewalk Citizen Bakery and Phil & Sebastian Coffee Roasters to create a collaborative and communal destination. The restaurant features an ultra-dry aged Alberta beef display, a meandering ceviche raw bar, and riverfront and rooftop patios. At its heart is a custom-made Argentine wood-fired grill honouring the art of asado and the culinary inspirations of Spain and Italy.

Food was underwhelming. The main courses were too pricey for the quality served. Hamburger was overcooked, bun was cold, and fries were not homemade. For a 29$ burger, you just expect a little more. Appetizers were delicious and innovative. Server was excellent. Bathroom required a code and while staff saw us going down there, no one told us we needed a code. This is likely to keep the unhoused out, but really? Basic dignity folks…

I booked my spouses birthday here. I am beyond disappointed with how slow our service was. Our server was very nice, however it took 40 minutes to get a drink, we ordered a bottle of wine and getting that was a whole run around and over an hour upon arriving to even order food. Although it was a Saturday night they weren’t overly busy and with a large party and auto gratuity I expected more. I asked to speak to the manager who never came over to talk to me. I was personally so embarrassed that I even suggested to book this venue. Disappointing to say the least.

This is my first experience with the brunch menu. We typically come later in the day. The service was excellent. Our table was ready, and our server was friendly and thoughtful. We ordered the brunch breakfast tower, which had ample selection and variety to satisfy any peckish couple. We also tried the poutine and the Assador‘s breakfast. the quality of the food was good, the bacon was excellent, the eggs were delicious with the chimichurri. The assorted fruit and fennel salad offset the richness of the sausage and hollandaise nicely. I had hoped for a steak of some sort which was not available on the menu so that would be a gentle negative comment. With their amazing grill cold and quiet, and the usual kitchen activity dormant, the experience was lackluster, despite the excellent glass elevator and room appointments. As usual, the music was nice and we enjoyed the pickle Caesar. Now that my brunch expectations are set, we will be back soon!

Menu was very limited. Weird having a brunch menu at 3.30pm.

Ambiance was great. Service was great. Food was pretty good. We had pizza/burger and fries. Both those were really nice. Then we also had 2 tenderloins which were VERY underwhelming. The actual steak was very nice. But for $58 there was a steak and two little baked potatoes on a large plate (the plate was mostly empty)...potatoes were plain and underwhelming. I would expect a little prettier sides/some greenery/ something more. Felt like a portion of a meal was served.

Came in last night, and I had a reservation for 9:45. I waited in front for 30 minutes no one even greeted me and my date just ignored us, then we proceeded to get put into a wait list even though we had a reservation. Finally got the table after 45 minutes of waiting.. was seated ordered a pizza and 2 steaks took an hour for food to come out. Terrible service food was amazing though would go back again 7.5/10
